The UIL State Executive Committee (SEC) on Thursday granted the appeal of Lewisville junior QB Laykon Brassfield’s family for varsity eligibility after Brassfield was ruled ineligible by the District 5-6A Executive Committee (DEC) on September 25. Brassfield transferred to Lewisville in March 2026 from Edmond North HS in Edmond, Oklahoma.
The DEC voted 5-2 that Brassfield did not transfer for athletic purposes but voted 7-0 that he did not meet residency requirements in Lewisville ISD. This ruling was due to Brassfield having two younger siblings enrolled in Argyle ISD. Additionally, Brassfield’s family was listed on the lease for a property in Argyle, and the address in Lewisville that the family was using was a one-bedroom studio apartment.
Frisco ISD assistant athletic director Chris Burtch, the DEC chair, informed the committee that he believed the reasoning behind the original vote centered on the siblings attending school in another district and the size of the Lewisville apartment, which did not appear sufficient for a family of that size.
During the SEC hearing, Brassfield’s father explained that he was on the lease for the property in Argyle as a financial co-signer and that his family was listed on the lease as a requirement from the property owner for insurance purposes.
Brassfield’s father asserted during the hearing that Lewisville was his family’s home and that they were on the waiting list for a larger unit in the apartment complex where they resided. Since the DEC hearing in September, Brassfield’s father informed the committee that they had moved into a larger unit within the same apartment complex. Additionally, Brassfield’s father advised the committee that they had since removed their names from the lease on the Argyle apartment and that Brassfield’s younger siblings had been withdrawn from Argyle ISD.
Brassfield is expected to play this week as state-ranked Lewisville takes on Flower Mound on Friday. The Farmers posted a 4-0 record during Brassfield’s absence, including a 42-7 win over Denton Guyer.
At this time, it does not appear that Lewisville’s three forfeited non-district wins in which Brassfield played will be reinstated, so Lewisville’s 4-3 overall record stands. Most importantly for the Farmers, they are 4-0 in district play and now get their outstanding signal-caller back for a possible playoff push.
