UIL State Thursday Rewind: Gunter Dominates, Slugfest Goes Malakoff's Way, Albany Repeats
the Gunter Tigers, Malakoff Tigers and Albany Lions won 2023 Texas High School Football State Championships on the second day of #UILState.

The first full day of UIL 11-man championship games proved to live up to the hype with six teams playing who had a combined 78-1 record going into the day.
Albany opened up the state championship triple-header in 2A-Division II with a workman-like 28-10 win over Mart, their second straight state title and their second win in a row over the Panthers at AT&T Stadium. It wasn’t necessarily a thing of beauty for the Lions, but led by RB/DE Adam Hill, Albany’s offense did just enough. Hill finished the afternoon with 132 yards rushing and two scores and he also caught a short touchdown pass right before halftime, putting the Lions up 21-3 and effectively putting the game out of reach. Albany’s defense was strong, but the Mart defense put out an absolutely heroic effort against long odds as Mart’s offense was clearly limited by injuries to QB DeMontrel Medlock and RB JD Bell, both players gutted it out but were far from 100%.
