AAC ready to step outside of Power Five shadow with eclectic group of programs, characters
The Power Five moniker dies as the College Football Playoff expands, allowing the AAC to step out of the shadows with the likes of UAB's Trent Dilfer, FAU's Tom Herman, Rice's JT Daniels and Tulsa's Kevin Wilson.

ARLINGTON – Forget young, hip, and cool, the new-look American Athletic Conference is weird, rad, and retro. Media days felt like a hallucination. Six new teams – UTSA, North Texas, Rice, UAB, Charlotte, and FAU – officially joined on July 1. Out are Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF. Seven of the conference’s 14 head coaches are entering their first year at their program.
Super Bowl-winning quarterback and new UAB head coach Trent Dilfer chatted next to the new, lean Tom Herman, who took over FAU this past offseason. Former Baylor quarterbacks Jacob Zeno and Gerry Bohanon were there representing other schools. Rice brought a former five-star quarterback recruit on his fourth school – JT Daniels – and the younger brother of the best running back in football – a former quarterback turned wide receiver named Luke McCaffrey.
