Tarleton reaps rewards of Shakur Daniel and Billy Gillispie’s relationship
Once a rising young star in Canada, Shakur Daniel built a relationship with Billy Gillispie in high school that has helped propel Tarleton’s men’s basketball program into NCAA Division I.

Shakur Daniel is a soft-spoken guy. He has a genuine ability to relate to people, and everyone who knows the man they call “Shak” considers him a friend.
Billy Gillispie is the man Daniel has referred to as “Coach G” since they met when Daniel played high school basketball at Southwest Christian Academy in Little Rock, Arkansas. But Daniel’s career didn’t begin in Arkansas.
