Texas Tech quarterback Donovan Smith was named Big 12 player of the week after a breakthrough performance against a stout Houston defense. The Red Raiders came into the game with questions at quarterback after the news from earlier in the week that Tech’s former starting quarterback, Tyler Shough, was out at least two weeks with a shoulder injury. Smith answered those questions immediately, throwing for a career high in passing yards (351) completions (36) and passing attempts (58). This was the most passing yards Houston has allowed in one game since their game last season against SMU. Smith was also clutch in the first overtime completing a 21-yard pass on 4th and 20 that helped extend the game. Tech would end up scoring a touchdown later that drive which extended the game to a second overtime. Smith was once again clutch in the second overtime period and scrambled into the endzone on a 9-yard run to win the game.

Houston’s next game will be at home against the Kansas Jayhawks this coming Saturday at 3:00pm (CT)
