College Football Playoff to expand to 12 teams in 2026

Even the beginning of Week 1 can't stop the flood of off-field news that dominated the 2022 calendar. But unlike conference realignment, most college football fans are on board with the latest change to the national landscape. The Board of Managers, a group of university chancellors and presidents that oversee the College Football Playoff, voted on Friday via virtual press conference to exapnd the current four-team playoff into a 12-team playoff starting in the 2026 season.

The 12 teams will consist of the six conference champions ranked highest by the selection committee plus the six highest-ranked teams not included among the six highest-ranked conference champions, says the official CFB website.
