San Antonio Brennan vs San Antonio Reagan: Two of San Antonio’s best at the 6A level hook up in a real measuring stick game for bragging rights in the Alamo City as some of the traditional powers in town have some question marks. Brennan went with the youth movement a year ago playing a ton of sophomores and they posted an impressive 10-2 record. QB Ashton Dubose is a dynamic dual threat who will operate behind a veteran offensive line, while Brennan’s defense will again have a calling card of being speedy and very physical. DB Tyler Turner and LB Wakil Mateen are the headliners for the Bears defense. Reagan was the king of the North East ISD district a year ago, but fell in the first round of the playoffs, the Rattlers return a dynamic offense led by QB Britton Moore and RB’s Carson Green and Javier Colsa. LB’s A.J. Herrera and Bryce Hamilton are the leaders of a defense that returns seven starters. Stepp’s Pick: San Antonio Brennan by 6
Abilene at Amarillo Tascosa: Abilene High takes the long road trip to the Panhandle where they’ll hook up with an Amarillo Tascosa squad that has their eyes on a regional title in 5A-Division I. The Eagles made a return trip to the playoffs a year ago and they stayed a while advancing to the third round of the playoffs. Abilene has a solid cast of skill players led by QB Abel Ramirez, RB Da’King Thomas and WR Anthony Ramirez. The Eagles have an athletic secondary and if they can answer some questions in the trenches on both sides of the ball, they are capable of making big noise in Region I in Class 6A. Tascosa is loaded with high-end talent led by RB Major Everhart, DL Avion Carter and QB B.T. Daniel who is back for his second season to operate the Rebels option-oriented attack. These two teams always play close, low scoring games and I expect nothing different this time around. Stepp’s Pick: Amarillo Tascosa by 4
