What makes the Texas football state championship games so special?
A first timer at the UIL Football State Championship Games tries to encapsulate why this event is so unparalleled in all of sports. Texas high school football is bigger, yes – but there’s more to it than that.

My first taste of the UIL Football State Championships didn’t come with tens of thousands of screaming fans in the crowd. In fact, the first came on Dec. 18 as Blum faced of against McLean for the UIL Class 1A Division I championship
The two towns with a combined population of 1,100 and combined school size of 164 students converged on the palacial AT&T Stadium for a six-man game, the smallest size the UIL recognizes. This reporter had never seen a six-man game before. But from the second that massive underdog Blum took the field against McLean, it became clear today was special.
