Throughout her first six seasons in Austin, Karen Aston established a standard. At the very least, that standard was Texas making a trip to the NCAA Tournament, but more times than not, it was the Sweet Sixteen, which featured Aston’s program every season from 2015-18. Last season, however, her Longhorns fell short of that feat. Texas did dance, but any hopes of a run were short-lived when the No. 7 Longhorns lost to No. 10 Indiana in the opening round.
An influx of key injuries was largely to blame, which, in turn, led to chemistry concerns and overall inconsistency. But that matters no more. After a down season and a fairly significant roster transformation throughout the offseason, expectations are back to what they’ve typically been under Aston — ESPN projects the Horns to enter 2019 ranked No. 15 nationally and No. 2 in the Big 12.
