Weather impacts in Houston and Southeast Texas
Through the first three weeks of the season, we had mostly avoided the poor weather that Mother Nature threw at us last September, but in Week 4, the weather took a turn as Tropical Storm Imelda dumped record amounts of rain fall in Greater Houston and in the Golden Triangle. The subsequent flooding caused a near total washout this weekend in the Golden Triangle, while most games in Houston got played, the majority of games that were scheduled for Thursday night, were pushed to Saturday.
District 10-6A is wide open
The past few years, the Garland ISD district has been totally dominated by Sachse. The Mustangs won 19-straight district games dating back to 2015 and appeared on their way to No. 20 Friday night. SHS led scrappy Wylie 21-10 late in the game, but a pair of late touchdowns from the Pirates gave Wylie a big 22-21 win and absolutely opened up the district race. The district’s other preseason favorite, Rowlett, got all it wanted from winless Garland Naaman Forest needing a fourth quarter blocked punt to set up the game-winning touchdown to win 7-6 on Friday night. Garland High, which has struggled, appears to be much improved while the surprise of the district might be North Garland, who is 4-0 for the first time since 1990 after a 28-14 win over Garland Lakeview Centennial.
