Texas high school football loses a legend
Saturday night, the community of Newton, Southeast Texas and the entire state lost a legend as former Newton head coach W.T. Johnston passed away. Johnston battled multiple health issues over the past few years, including a double lung transplant and one of the world’s rarest diseases in Graft vs Host Disease. Johnston bravely battled through it all over the past few years, including coaching the Eagles from the sidelines with an oxygen tank and last year from a golf cart on the sideline. Johnston guided the Eagles to three state title games during his tenure, including back-to-back state titles in 2017 and 2018. Johnston retired in March and lived long enough to see his son Drew promoted to head coach in early April. His post state title game interviews inspired millions worldwide and his legacy lives on through the coaches and kids who impacted during his life.
Josh Finney returns to his alma mater
Mount Vernon head coach Josh Finney on Monday night was named the new HFC at Winnsboro High School, replacing Steve Pinnell who moves into an AD-only role. Finney, a Winnsboro High graduate, spent the past two seasons at Mount Vernon posting a 19-5 record and had an impressive 74-32 record in nine years as a head coach at Maud, Teague, Hull-Daisetta and Mount Vernon.
