This Week in Texas High School Football: April 20

Crowley ISD brings in two new coaches Thursday night Crowley ISD held a special school board meeting to name football coaches at both high schools. Crowley High named Fort Worth South Hills head coach J.J. Resendez as its next head football coach/campus coordinator. Resendez, who has been head coach at South Hills for eight years, has posted a 54-30 mark, including a 42-12 record the past five seasons. He’s led South Hills to back to back district titles and has led the Scorpions to consecutive ten win seasons becoming the first school from Fort Worth ISD to accomplish this feat since 1979. Resendez prior to taking over at South Hills had been an assistant at Haltom, Fort Worth Eastern Hills and North Crowley. North Crowley is bringing on Dallas Lincoln offensive coordinator Courtney Allen to be their next head football coach. Allen has previously been an assistant at Fort Worth Wyatt and Lancaster before he became the Dallas Lincoln offensive coordinator prior to the 2016 season.  Because of the late hires of both coaches, both Crowley and North Crowley will forego spring football and will instead start fall practice a week early and participate in two scrimmages in the pre-season instead of just one. Zapata hires Joel Lopez As had been rumored, Zapata brought a native son home last Wednesday hiring former Laredo Alexander head coach Joel Lopez to be the next head football coach/athletic director at ZHS. Lopez spent the last twelve seasons as the head coach at Laredo Alexander posting a 78-64 record before being reassigned in January by United ISD. Prior his tenure at Alexander, Lopez was head coach at Laredo Nixon from 1999-2005. Lopez replaces Mario Arce who spent the last 23 years in Zapata, 16 as the head football coach. Rocky Smart resigns at Clyde In a bit of a surprise move out of the Big Country on Wednesday, Clyde head football coach/athletic director resigned his post after six seasons leading his alma mater. Smart led the Bulldogs to the playoffs in five straight seasons and had a solid 41-25 record in his six-year stint. Prior to his time at Clyde, Smart was the head football coach at Seymour. Smart told DCTF Wednesday he was not leaving Clyde to take another head football coaching position but was seeking a new opportunity in the coaching world. Elkhart tabs Jason Fiacco as head coach Elkhart on Monday night named Yoakum offensive coordinator Jason Fiacco as head football coach/athletic director. Fiacco, a native of Wisconsin, was the Bulldogs’ offensive coordinator in 2016 when they played for a state title and now he’ll get a chance to lead the Elks in his first head coaching position. Mathis brings in Mesquite Poteet assistant On Friday, Mathis announced it was hiring Mesquite Poteet special teams coordinator/defensive line coach Bo Camacho as its next head football coach. Camacho, a native of San Angelo, is a 24-year veteran of coaching with stops at Dallas Kimball, PSJA, San Benito, LaFeria, San Antonio Highlands and Del Rio before spending the last three years at Mesquite Poteet. Camacho takes over for Rod Blount who left Mathis to take over at Geronimo Navarro. Rice Consolidated hires Jared Sloan from Hardin-Jefferson Rice Consolidated named Hardin-Jefferson head coach Jared Sloan as its next head football coach/athletic director on Monday evening at its board meeting. Sloan, who spent the last three years at Hardin-Jefferson, was previously an assistant at Richmond George Ranch before making the move to the Golden Triangle in 2015, Sloan replaces Gary Zeinert who resigned in March. Lindsay doesn’t look far for new head coach Lindsay ISD only needed to look about 10 miles west to name its next head football coach/athletic director as Muenster DC Jeff Smiley was named to the position at a board meeting Monday night. Smiley was the defensive coordinator for the Hornets state title team a year ago and now he moves to Lindsay which is Muenster’s biggest rival and their annual matchup will have a bit of extra spice to it in 2018. First 7-on-7 SQT of the summer next week Next Saturday, April 28, we will have our first State Qualifying Tournament as 24 teams will descend on The Star in Frisco to compete for one of three spots in the 2018 7-on-7 State Tournament.
