Ranking the best QBs in the 2019 class

Wednesday, the 2018 recruiting season officially hit the finish line, but now it's time for a focus on 2019. Naturally, we're starting with the best quarterbacks in the class, led by Texas commit Roschon Johnson of Port Noches-Groves. In 13 games last year, he rushed for 1,627 yards and 29 scores and threw for 2,918 yards with 35 touchdowns and just five picks. Our rankings are powered by Next Level Athlete and NLA's Dan Thompson sees Johnson as a passer with the frame to withstand the kinds of hits he might take in Tom Herman's offense. Thompson's work ethic in the weight room 12 months a year has earned him notoriety in the program, and his arm strength allows him to make any throw asked of him. "He's really dangerous off schedule on the run, a tough physical runner when he needs to be," Thompson said, "but he can wiggle and break down defenders in space." Johnson committed to the Longhorns last July. Chase Griffin, the No.  21 quarterback on our list, has natural questions about his height, but might climb over the next year as scouts more closely scrutinize his game. Thompson compared him to Lake Travis alum Todd Reesing, who won an Orange Bowl at Kansas and finished his career with 11,194 passing yards and 90 touchdowns as a Jayhawk. "He is everything you want mentally in a leader and decision maker on the field," Thompson said of Griffin. "The game has really slowed down for him. He's mentally always a step ahead of the defense." And look out for No. 7 Sean Simms, who transferred to South Oak Cliff from DeSoto, who boasts a high ceiling and could get closer to it with some work on his mechanics over the summer. Only three of the top quarterbacks in Texas have committed, so the next 10 months should be frenzied, especially since players can now make campus visits in the spring.
