Time for TCU to panic? North Texas to a C-USA title game? Five questions from the college football weekend

Does TCU hit the panic button with Kenny Hill? Maybe it’s a bit of an overreaction after the No. 4 team in the country lost its first game of the season. But with the Horned Frogs’ only points in a 14-7 loss to No. 25 Iowa State coming on a kickoff return for a touchdown by KaVontae Turpin, there is certainly at least a little reason for TCU fans to be concerned with the direction of the offense. Quarterback Kenny Hill had his worst game of the year with two turnovers in the red zone. With the offense failing to score a point, it’s only a matter of time before the TCU faithful get antsy with freshman Shawn Robinson waiting for his opportunity on the sideline. Again, it may be too soon to take the ball out of the hands of a senior quarterback on a team that could still make some noise down the stretch of the season. But will Hill’s inconsistencies continue to create chaos for the Horned Frogs? What has to happen for a switch to be made?Is North Texas back on track to claim a spot in the Conference USA title game? The mood in Denton was noticeably less enthusiastic in the days following a bad 69-31 loss to FAU last week, but the Mean Green did what they needed to in order to bounce back and stay alive in the hunt for a berth in the Conference USA championship. The defense, which allowed 11 straight scoring drives and 804 yards to FAU, gave up just two touchdowns in a 42-35 win over ODU and came up with four consecutive stops late in the fourth quarter to seal the win. The offense is going to get its points and with a relatively light schedule to close the year, the defense doesn’t need to do too much to guide North Texas into the C-USA title game. Was Saturday’s win enough to show that last week was a fluke? The team still controls its own destiny, but will they capitalize on a light schedule to close out the season? Does Houston finally have an answer to its offensive struggles? There is little doubt who won the weekend in Texas, and that was Houston’s D’Eriq King. King became the third different quarterback to start for the Cougars this season, but he quickly showed an ability to lead the offense much more efficiently than Kyle Allen and Kyle Postma. King scored the game-winning touchdown with just 11 seconds left to give Houston a big 28-24 win over No. 17 South Florida. In doing so, he provided a glimmer of hope to what’s been a struggling offensive unit. If King is the answer, what will Houston be able to accomplish over the next few weeks? After a (expected) loss to Oklahoma, what’s next for Texas Tech? The Red Raiders knew this stretch of games would be a tough one coming into the season, but with three straight losses and an 11 a.m. kickoff against Kansas State looming next week, Texas Tech has its work cut out for them. After the Wildcats, a home game against Baylor precedes tough matchups against TCU and Texas to finish the year. The path to a bowl game is bleak, and the Red Raiders are going to have to have a few things fall their way to get to six wins. Will a return to Lubbock make a difference against Kansas State? Does Rice have another win in its system? Rice hasn’t done a whole lot of anything good this season outside of its 31-14 win over UTEP. But the Owls put a scare into Louisiana Tech before letting the game get away from them in the final minutes of a 42-28 loss. With a 1-7 record to their name, the Owls at least showed they could hang with a quality opponent for 58 minutes. Is Rice able to build on that performance and steal a win from one of its final four C-USA west opponents?
