Kingwood, Summer Creek square off in district showdown

Taco Bell and Dave Campbell's Texas Football have teamed up to feature one must-see Texas high school football matchup each week in the Houston area. This week: Kingwood vs. Humble Summer Creek, 7 p.m. Friday night at Turner Stadium.

As the Texas high school football regular season nears its end, each district game across the state has higher stakes for those in position to advance to the postseason. This week’s Taco Bell Road Tour game is no different. Humble Summer Creek is in a fairly comfortable spot for the moment (4-2, 3-1 District 21-6A) as they sit in a tie for second place with Galena Park North Shore. But Kingwood (2-4, 2-2 District 21-6A) still has work to do after entering the week in a tie with Sterling for the fourth and final playoff spot. Kingwood’s two district losses have come to the top two teams in the standings (Atascocita and North Shore) while Summer Creek fell to Atascocita after squeaking by C.E. King and Sterling by a combined six points. The two teams will meet Friday night at Turner Stadium with hopes of taking the next step towards the postseason. Kingwood has won the last two meetings behind the play of its defense, holding Summer Creek to a combined seven points over the last two years. Both teams are averaging less than 26 points per game this year, so another defensive battle isn’t out of the question. When the Bulldogs have found success offensively this season, it’s been through the play of quarterback John Holcombe, who totaled 274 yards and two scores in a 34-30 win over C.E. King on Oct. 13. Kingwood relies on quarterback Matt Slayton, who led the Mustangs with 193 yards and two touchdowns in a 23-7 win over Channelview on Oct. 13. Both offenses will be looking to bounce back from tough showings last week though, as Atascocita held Summer Creek scoreless while Kingwood managed just seven points against North Shore. The Bulldogs will be looking for their first win over Kingwood since 2014. The Mustangs went on to go two rounds deep in the playoffs after defeating Summer Creek 15-0 last season.
