DQ Big Game of the Week preview: Lubbock Monterey vs. Lubbock Coronado

This week’s DQ Big Game of the Week is yet another rivalry game. We love rivalry games because.. ..well.. ..EVERYONE loves rivalry games. It doesn’t matter if you’re 5-0 and they're 0-5 or vice versa. The only thing that matters is that WE get a chance to beat the pigskin out of YOU...or some such.

This week it’s the Monterey Plainsmen traveling all the way to Coronado to take on the Mustangs. Not a long trip actually, just from the ‘home’ locker room to the ‘visitors.’ They share PlainsCapital Park-Lowrey Field there in Lubbock. Coronado's the home team this year and feeling at home. The ‘Stangs are unbeaten and a Top 10 team in Texas. Second team All-State quarterback Qua Gray is tearing it up again this season, but so has the rest of the squad. Gray has had to finish only one game all year; his back-up gets plenty of reps because Coronado is imposing their will at-will. The Mustangs also won last year’s rivalry game in style; 49-14 and that was on a Monterey team that ended up going three rounds deep in the playoffs. But that score is an anomaly. From 2009 until last year, the teams were separated by just 15 total points in those seven games! No matter who won, it was ALWAYS close. That, more than anything, might just be the defining characteristic of a great rivalry.
