Happy and Borden County reign, Veribest surprises in six-man's Week 5

Each week, Dave Campbell’s Texas Football six-man insider Leman Saunders offers his thoughts on the six-man weekend that was. -No. 1 Borden County and No. 2 Happy remain at the top of Division I after each handling ranked teams with ease — so much so that the game ended at halftime via mercy rule. Borden County took down Naareth, 58-8, and Happy defeated Crowell, 74-16. -In one of the best games in the state, Robert Lee took down Highland 36-34. Robert Lee trailed 34-30 late in the fourth quarter before scoring and holding off Highland to improve to 4-1 on the year. -Union Hill’s Colt Mallory turned in a big night offensively, running for 417 yards and seven touchdowns while throwing for 164 yards and four scores in the Bulldogs’ 110-64 win over Marshall Christian. - White Deer is now 5-0 and has still yet to allow a single point. The Bucks will face their biggest challenge this week when they meet up with Follett. Looking down the road, District 1-1A Division I will be fun to watch — Happy, White Deer and McLean are a combined 14-0 heading into this week. -Lorenzo and Silverton are flying way under the radar — both are undefeated, yet can’t crack the state rankings. Lorenzo (5-0) is looking for its first winning season since 2007. Both teams won’t be undefeated for long, though — Lorenzo faces Silverton this week. -Lazbuddie, despite a 3-2 record, is also flying under-the-radar after their 35-28 win over Hedley. The two losses are forfeits — the Longhorns were winning their Week 2 game by a large margin before injuries forced them to concede the matchup as well as their Week 3 game. -The biggest upset of the week was Veribest’s 71-25 thumping of state-ranked Panther Creek. Veribest, now 4-1 on the year, was in a groove offensively and forced PC turnovers on five consecutive possessions. No wonder the Falcons were named DCTF’s Army Values School of the Week for Class 1A.
