Cy Ridge, Langham Creek face off in District 17-6A showdown

Taco Bell and Dave Campbell's Texas Football have teamed up to feature one must-see Texas high school football matchup each week in the Houston area. This week: Cypress Springs vs. Cy-Fair, 7 p.m. Friday night at Pridgeon Stadium.

Cypress Ridge hasn’t been able to catch a break through its first two games of the season. After falling to Jersey Village 26-16 in the opener, the Rams lost a 35-34 heartbreaker to Cypress Woods last week. Two losses by a combined 11 points have coach Gary Thiebaud and company hungry for a win, but things won’t get any easier this week. Cy Ridge faces off against a talented Langham Creek squad Friday night in this week’s Taco Bell Road Tour game. Langham Creek (2-0) enters the matchup with two impressive wins under its belt, as the Lobos outscored Cypress Creek and Cypress Falls 83-38. Langham Creek is averaging more than 430 yards of offense per game and has thrived behind a dominant rushing attack that the Rams will need to slow down to stay in the game. The Lobos have four players averaging more than six yards per carry, but the duo of senior Chris Mehn and junior Chris Herron have accounted for the majority of the yardage on the ground. The two have combined to rush for 410 yards and six scores. Herron, the Langham Creek quarterback, has added 244 yards and four touchdowns through the air. While the Rams’ defense aims to slow down the explosive Lobos’ offense, Cypress Ridge will rely on the trio of Justice Porter, Noah Smith and Jacobi Jackson to light up the scoreboard. Porter (377 yards, 4 TDs) is the quarterback, but Smith (550 total yards, 3 TDs) rotates all over the offense and will take some snaps as well. Jackson is the team’s second leading receiver, behind Smith, with 134 yards and two scores. After going four rounds deep in the playoffs last year, Cypress Ridge desperately needs a win to get back into the District 17-6A playoff hunt. The Rams defeated Langham Creek 23-17 last year, but the Lobos have won four of the last five matchups.
