The highest-scoring game in Texas high school football history highlights six-man's Week 4

Each week, Dave Campbell’s Texas Football six-man insider Leman Saunders offers his thoughts on the six-man weekend that was. -Maybe the biggest headline-grabber of Week 4 at any level: Campbell 125, Fannindel 122, which became the new highest-scoring game in Texas high school football history, passing Fort Davis’ 124-108 victory over Midland Trinity in 2011. Even more amazing: the game that was shortened, ending with 7:35 left in the fourth quarter right after Campbell took the lead. Fannindel had suffered a very scary head injury to a player that had to be airlifted out, as well as a few other minor injuries, and they were more concerned about their players’ safety and health than finishing the game. To head coach Erik Pevey’s and Fannindel’s credit, they kept playing long enough to give Campbell a fair shot at taking the lead; when they did, it was then that both coaches agreed to end the contest early. The game featured more than 1,200 yards of total offense, nearly 100 plays, no punts and just one turnover — a Campbell fumble in the first quarter. The injured Fannindel player is recovering well, but will likely not participate in athletics moving forward as a precaution. -In similar fashion, Lometa and Morgan fought in a close game that had to be stopped early — with 2:39 remaining in the fourth quarter — when a Morgan player suffered a head injury and was airlifted from the field. He’s expected to make a full recovery; Lometa won the contest, 51-43. -In the six-man game of the week, Balmorhea turned it on in the fourth quarter to vault past highly ranked Garden City, 69-32. Balmorhea held a 34-24 lead at halftime, and Garden City cut the lead to 34-32 entering the final quarter. But that’s when the Bears turned it on, outscoring the Bearkats 35-0 to cap off the big win. The performance was good enough to vault Balmorhea into the No. 1 spot in DCTF’s 1A Division II rankings. -Borden County didn’t pitch a shutout this week, but the Coyotes did force several turnovers and held Bryson to a season-low 16 points in a 62-16 mercy rule win at halftime. Bryson threatened to score with hopes of extending the game into the third quarter, but Borden County intercepted a pass from the 2-yard line and returned it for a touchdown — only to have the score called back when the Coyotes’ sideline got a little too happy about the play. -Knox City trailed 42-40 at halftime to Throckmorton, but rallied in a big way to win 92-42 via mercy rule. That’s a 52-0 second half! It was the first time Knox City beat Throckmorton since 1999, when they were both playing 11-man ball. -White Deer is quietly sitting at 4-0 on the season, and have outscored their opponents 227-0. The Bucks cracked the DCTF 1A Division I rankings; former Buck and NFL star Zach Thomas would be proud!
