DQ Big Game of the Week preview: Schulenburg vs. Weimar
WEEK 4 OF THE DQ BIG GAME OF THE WEEK FINDS NEIL BEASLEY AND COMPANY JUST WEST OF HOUSTON.

Another week for the DQ Big Game of the Week and another rivalry game! After a fantastic match-up last week for the ‘Battle of the Bridge’ between Gregory-Portland and cross-bridge neighbors Corpus Christi Carroll, this week features a pair of schools just seven miles apart down I-10 due west of Houston. The Schulenburg Shorthorns and the Weimar Wildcats have a fun one going although it’s been a bit one-sided as of late. The Shorthorns have been long on wins; ten of the last eleven meetings it’s been Schulenburg taking the I-10 Shootout title in a rivalry that reportedly dates back to 1922.
But Weimar’s got something ‘extra’ to play for this year. Head coach David Husmann is in his last of 26 seasons before hanging up his whistle for good, retiring whenever the final gun goes off in 2017 after seven years in Weimar and five as head coach. Husmann, who played football and baseball at the University of Houston, has even more ties to this rivalry. He not only coached for the now rival Shorthorns; he won a pair of state titles in Schulenburg! In fact, he led the ‘Horns to another state title appearance in his 13 seasons seven miles west of Weimar, putting together an impressive 139-31-1 record making the state playoffs in eleven of those campaigns. Husmann was also the head man at Gladewater for eight seasons, compiling an overall record of 213-90-1 heading in to this year. Husmann does have a state title with the Wildcats but not on the football field, he led the ladies golf team to the 2011 State 1A (now 2A) links championship. But make no mistake, short of another state title, you KNOW he wants to make his mark on this rivalry just one more time before he rides off (on a golf cart) into the sunset.
