Friday Night Five: Bremond's incredible streak ends at 49

We finally got football from border to border in Texas for the first time this season following the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, and it couldn't come soon enough. We got our first glimpse of a few powerhouses in the Houston area, but it was a smaller powerhouse to the north that leads the way. 1. Bremond loses 28-21 to Milano, ending 49-game winning streak On December 6, 2013, Bremond fell to Tenaha 24-7 in the state quarterfinals. It was a disappointing loss to a bitter rival. Since then, though, it's been one heck of a run. Jeff Kasowski's Tigers have won three state championships, 49 straight games, and outscored their opponents by an average score of 47-11. With the core of those titles gone, everyone in the state understood it would take a special effort to continue the streak. Their effort ties them with Abilene (1954-57) and Southlake Carroll (2004-07) for third place all-time. Only Celina (1998-02) with 68 wins and Allen (2012-15) with 57 have put together longer runs. The loss also means West Orange-Stark now holds the state's longest active winning streak with 28 straight. 2. Manvel opens with a statement win over Pearland Last year, Manvel fell to Temple in the playoffs in a disappointing end to a season that had a ton of promise. The Mavericks lost 45 lettermen and 12 starters from that team, so 2017 was time to hit the reset button, right? Wrong. A 45-7 romp over a strong Pearland program means we may have to keep an eye on the Manvel's redemption tour. 3. Harlingen scores one for the Valley The Cardinals are no stranger to big wins, and they have a tradition of success. Still, anytime a Valley school travels north and knocks off a major program, it's newsworthy. Harlingen toppled San Antonio Reagan 22-20, and on the same night that San Benito romped over McAllen Memorial, 31-7, which means the hype around the Battle of the Arroyo will only build as it gets closer. 4. San Antonio O'Connor knocks off Cibolo Steele, 42-30 This is what Texas high school football is about:

Emotional HC Malesky as @OCNATION2017 beats Steele. Great stuff (vid @markmendez) @roelsanchezjr @N_Bradford5 @Thatguy_Zaire @JalenHughes4 pic.twitter.com/CUGv7tRipf
