Offensive explosions, bizarre forfeits and close calls highlight Week 2 six-man thoughts

Each week, Dave Campbell’s Texas Football six-man insider Leman Saunders offers his thoughts on the six-man weekend that was. -Jake Gerber ain’t no baby! The Nazareth running back had a huge game in the Swifts’ 94-80 win over Ropes, running for 309 yards and seven touchdowns on just 15 carries. Not only that, but he caught four of QB Trayton McLain’s passes for 175 yards and four scores receiving. Oh, and he also converted a one-point PAT for 67 total points scored and 484 yards of total offense. And he recorded 20 tackles on defense. -Week 2’s marquee matchups were mostly one-sided, while other less talked-about schools put on a show. In the heavyweight battles, Calvert pulled away from Coolidge in the second half to win 74-38; Milford dominated Jonesboro 71-44; and Valley controlled the entire game against Follett with a 44-20 victory. But it was unranked teams that battled in back-and-forth games: Aspermont came out on top 44-42 in a thriller with Jayton; Lueders-Avoca beat Loraine 82-80; Avalon hung on to beat Rockwall Heritage 47-46; Mullin beat Rising Star in OT 56-50; and Leverett’s Chapel beat Fruitvale 34-32. -Lazbuddie suffered arguably the worst defeat of the week. Leading 61-28 in the third quarter over Plainview Christian, the Longhorns suffered four injuries that took their nine-man roster down to just five. To their credit, Lazbuddie attempted to play with just five on the field, but Plainview Christian’s numbers advantage sparked fear of even more injuries on the Longhorns’ roster, and the squad decided it was best to forfeit. -Wortham has found the six-man game is a great way to fill a junior varsity schedule, as the Bulldogs took on Hubbard in JV action this week even though they are both Class 2A Division II programs. Wortham (enrollment: 153) doesn’t look like it’s on the six-man bubble, but Hubbard (enrollment: 112) might be. For what it’s worth, Hubbard’s JV won, 46-12. -Panther Creek has teamed up with their name-sharing brother Panther Creek High School in Cary, N.C. to help with the Hurricane Harvey relief effort. The student councils at the schools have created an Amazon page where people can purchase items and have them shipped to Panther Creek (in Texas), which will then be delivered to Houston at the end of the month. The cutoff date to order off of the Amazon registry is September 23.
