DQ Big Game of the Week: Gregory-Portland vs. Corpus Christi Carroll
Week 3 of the DQ Big Game of the Week finds Neil Beasley and company on the Coastal Bend.

This week’s DQ Big Game of the Week is one we were looking forward to long before the unwanted visit from Harvey. The ‘Battle of the Bridge’ (the Nueces Bay Causeway to be exact) between Gregory-Portland and Carroll. It’s not the longest running rivalry in Texas, but it is a good one. It seems to go in spurts and it’s spurtin’ now. Carroll has won five straight games in the series including TWO last year. The G-P seniors are anxious to make amends before donning that graduation cap next spring.
Hurricane Harvey has certainly added some unwanted drama to the mix. Families from both communities are still dealing with the aftermath in myriad ways. Gregory-Portland has enrolled about 300 students from surrounding districts misplaced from the storm. And if you think it’s crazy trying to fit in that many new students in one week’s time, imagine being one of those kids! Hopefully they’re getting all settled in and back on their feet, even if it is with a new home team to cheer for. And speaking of cheering, GP is hoping to have a lot to cheer about. Second-year head coach Rick Rhoades brings his winning pedigree from Cameron Yoe, where he guided the Yoemen to three State Championships in back-to-back-to-back years (’12-’14). Is year two the season his magic begins to sprinkle over the ‘Cats? Gregory-Portland got Harvey’d out in week one, but quickly scheduled a game with 6A Conroe Oak Ridge just to ‘try’ and re-make their schedule a bit. The Wildcats lost that one, but learned something about their squad they can bring in to this catfight.
