Thursday night's must-see Texas high school football games for Week 2

Guyer vs. DeSoto This is a game you definitely won’t want to miss. After spotting Mansfield Lake Ridge a 21-3 lead in the first quarter last week, No. 24 Guyer stormed back to score 34 unanswered points behind a dominating performance by the team’s vaunted rushing attack and an impressive increase in defensive intensity. The defending Class 6A state champion, No. 5 DeSoto, was able to hold on for a 41-36 win over Dallas Jesuit, using a big interception in the red-zone from Jaylond Dorris to seal a nail-biting victory. Both teams take a step up in competition when they meet at C.H. Collins Thursday night. The Eagles ran away with this game last year after several early Guyer mistakes helped DeSoto build what turned into an insurmountable lead. Courtney Douglas is under center for the Eagles now, but he brings a similar skillset to that of former quarterback Shawn Robinson – who is now at TCU. The Eagles have an advantage on size in the trenches, but if Luke Stillwell is able to take a step forward in the passing game this week, the Wildcats have a chance to pull off an upset.   Fossil Ridge vs. Flower Mound A battle of the Panthers. Flower Mound kicked off year two of the Brian Basil era with a shutout win over W.T. White, but their first real challenge will come on the road against Fossil Ridge. Fossil Ridge has a group loaded with experience coming off a playoff appearance last season, and the team dominated Arlington Lamar on the road last week. This game will likely be an offensive shootout, but the key for Flower Mound to stay in the game will be to find a way to somehow slow down Stefan Cobbs. That won’t be easy though, as the senior exploded for 180 yards and three touchdowns last week. Cobbs is the biggest weapon in the Fossil Ridge offensive attack, so they’ll turn to him a lot. Slow him down, and Flower Mound will have a chance to compete. Sherman vs. Frisco Liberty Both Sherman and Frisco Liberty suffered big losses last week – Sherman to Sulphur Springs and Liberty to Frisco Wakeland. With an opportunity to get things back on track this week, both teams will be looking to hit the reset button. The Bearcats were able to hit on a couple of big plays against Sulphur Springs, but otherwise struggled to find any offensive consistency last week. Sherman will look to get running back Nathaniel Omayebu going early this week to get its offense started. Liberty struggled to matchup both offensively and defensively against Wakeland, so preventing those long plays Sherman found success with will be important. San Antonio O’Connor vs. San Antonio Churchill A matchup between two unbeaten San Antonio schools headlines the south Texas slate of games, as Churchill looks to rebound from a 49-12 loss to O’Connor last season. The game should be much closer this year as the Chargers bring back 11 starters from a team that went four rounds deep in the playoffs. Churchill quarterback Derek Perez didn’t throw an incomplete pass and accounted for four touchdowns in a dominating 48-20 win over Clark last week while O’Connor QB Roel Sanchez went for just under 300 total yards with five touchdowns. Those two will lead a pair of talented offenses in what will be a fun game to watch.
