Texas 7-on-7 State Championship Day Three Recap

The 2017 Texas 7-on-7 State Championships wrapped up on Saturday with Lake Travis taking down Waxahachie 34-33 in a thriller to win the Cavaliers their second ever 7-on-7 state title. The Cavs on the day won three games on the final play of the game, including a touchdown pass to beat Katy Cinco Ranch 34-28 in the Round of 16, Garrett Wilson hauling in a Hail Mary at the final horn to beat A&M Consolidated 41-40 in the semifinals, and then the LTHS defense stopping a two-point try from Waxahachie on the game’s final play. Lake Travis’ win completed an 8-0 weekend and confirmed what most thought: despite losing a stellar senior class, the Cavaliers will still be a force in 2017. Austin’s Big Day Saturday was a day for the ATX as Lake Travis and Hutto posted a combined 10-0 record to win the championship bracket and consolation bracket respectively. We’ve already recapped the day for Lake Travis, but Hutto quietly got on a roll in the consolation bracket and took home the crown beating San Antonio O’Connor 41-39. The Hippos had a very impressive 61-27 win over The Woodlands in the consolation quarterfinals, maybe the most impressive performance of the day. Round Rock Cedar Ridge advanced to the consolation semifinals, while Cedar Park fell in a thriller to Waxahachie in the Round of 16. Garrett Wilson and Tevin Wofford Duel in the Title Game We all knew Garrett Wilson was good, but how good? We weren’t quite sure but he’s now the go-to guy for the Cavaliers after spending his sophomore year as a secondary weapon for more experienced players. Wilson certainly served notice to the entire state this weekend that he’s going to be force. The junior to be was sensational all weekend with circus catch after circus catch and several in big situations. Most notable was his 45 yard hail mary touchdown catch in the semifinal win over A&M Consolidated on the game’s final play to give the Cavs a 41-40 win. In the title game, Wilson stepped up and hauled in four touchdown catches in the Lake Travis win over Waxahachie, including the game winner, which was a leaping grab in the corner of the end zone. Not to be outdone, unheralded WR Tevin Wofford from Waxahachie had a monster weekend, the 6-foot-4 senior to be showed he’s ready to emerge as a leading outside receiver. He can stretch the field vertically and is big enough to make tough catches in traffic, so don’t be surprised to see the college scouts take a closer look in 2017. College Station’s Success College Station has just two high schools and both made some impressive runs in the championship bracket Saturday — one was expected and one kind of came out nowhere. College Station made the quarterfinals last year at State 7-on-7 and turned it into a big fall football season. They were expected to do well and they delivered, advancing all the way to the quarterfinals before falling to arch rival A&M Consolidated. Speaking of Consolidated, the “Lee Fedora Effect” could be kicking in as the Tigers got on a roll Saturday and it didn’t stop until that Lake Travis Hail Mary in the semifinals. WR Nate Floyd had a big tournament, and the Tigers defense  stepped up big with a pick six on the first play of the game and three other interceptions in the 46-35 win over College Station. Private Schools Make Strong Showings Fort Worth All Saints, Houston St. Pius and Plano Prestonwood were the only three private schools in the tournament and two of the three made the championship bracket. All Saints and St. Pius went a combined 6-0 on Day One, winning their respective pools. All Saints made an impressive run on Saturday, getting all the way to the quarterfinals before losing to Clear Brook, while St. Pius fell in the Round of 16 to A&M Consolidated. Region IV Teams Love the Consolation Bracket San Antonio O’Connor and Mercedes are both regulars in the consolation bracket and both compete very well in their pool, but when these two get to the consolation bracket, they make some noise. O’Connor went 0-3 on Friday, losing three close games, but the Panthers got on a roll Saturday, going 4-1 and getting to the consolation championship before falling to Hutto. In 2015, O’Connor got to the consolation bracket and made a run to the semifinals. Mercedes, who was a tough luck third place team in their pool (going 2-1 Friday), had a strong showing Saturday. They reached the consolation semifinals for the second straight year, this time falling to Hutto by a touchdown.
