In the last ten seasons, there have been 40 state champions in the top two classifications — 6A Division I, 6A DII, 5A DI and 5A DII. Of those 40 state champs, would you care to guess how many have hailed from the greater San Antonio area? One. That's right: San Antonio has brought home just a single big-school state championship in the last ten seasons — Cibolo Steele's 2010 5A Division II title. And if you expand it back to the turn of the century, it doesn't get a whole lot better; you add Alamo Heights' 2006 title and Converse Judson's 2002 title, but in sum, San Antonio has just three of the 68 big-school state championships in this century. This isn't to pick on the Alamo City — far from it. If anything, the greater San Antonio area has been a haven of underrated small-school high school football. But the 2016 season was much like the 15 that preceded it in many regards. For the sake of clarity, here is a map of how we are defining “San Antonio." Now that we’ve set the boundaries, let’s break down the best of high school football in San Antonio in 2016. Top 20
