Arlington Seguin HC Carlos Lynn was hired Monday night. At first glance, some may question the hire of a coach with just a 45-50 record as a HFC, but Lynn’s ties to Cedar Hill are extensive and with the success CHHS has had on the field, it’s likely AD Gina Farmer wanted to keep as much staff continuity as possible. Lynn was key in helping McGuire turn Cedar Hill into a power in the early 2000’s as he was the DC for the Longhorns' first title team in 2006. Lynn is well respected and thought of in Cedar Hill, and this hire certainly ensures plenty of continuity in Longhorn Country. Expect the Arlington Seguin job to get plenty of interest as Arlington ISD AD Kevin Ozee is well respected, and with the AISD facility upgrades – including beautiful indoor facilities on campus – Seguin is an attractive opening. North Forney is interviewing eight candidates for their vacant head coaching position starting Thursday and Friday, while Weatherford is wrapping up their process and should have a hire in place shortly. Down in San Antonio, Cibolo Steele begins their transition as Scott Lehnhoff moved into his new role as SCUCISD Athletic Director, co-DC David Saenz was named interim HFC, and we’d be surprised if anyone other than Saenz is named new HFC at Steele. San Antonio Holmes also found their new HC as they bring in San Antonio Highlands HC Juan Morales. Morales, in just two years, completely turned Highlands around, and he has may fans in the Alamo City. Down in Class 4A, LaVernia has narrowed their field to a lone finalist who will be brought to the school board on Thursday. Belton quickly moved to replace retired HC Bob Shipley as Belton ISD, which is putting the framework in place for a possible second high school down the road, split their HFC/AD duties up. Former OC Michael Morgan was promoted to Belton ISD Athletic Director, while DC Sam Skidmore was tabbed as HFC. In other news of head coaches moving into administration, Cy Fair ISD hired Cy Falls HFC Kirk Eaton as the district’s assistant athletic director. Eaton departs Cy Falls after six years at the helm, and Cy Fair ISD is close to naming a new HFC at Bridgeland High School with a decision expected by the end of this week. Houston King has narrowed their field to three finalists and their process to tab a new HFC should be ending soon, while down in 5A Galena Park opened with the resignation of David Handal. One of the real characters in Texas High School Football coaching, Rosenberg Terry HC Tim Teykl, announced his retirement on Tuesday. Teykl, who spent 26 years as the HC at Terry, took the Rangers to the playoffs 15 times. A true testament to Teykl’s ability as a coach: towards the end of his career, he managed to keep his team very competitive despite the majority of his roster’s depth being depleted with the opening of George Ranch. Teykl switched to a veer offense and shortened the games to help cope with his team’s lack of numbers, and it helped THS post winning seasons in 2011, 2012 and 2016, and 5-5 marks in 2013 and 2014. It was a busy week in Bryan-College Station as A&M Consolidated and Bryan Rudder both filled their vacant coaching positions. A&M Consolidated hit it out of the park with their hire as former Navasota HC Lee Fedora returns to his alma mater to become the head coach. Fedora, who sat out of coaching in 2016, won a pair of state titles just down the road at Navasota. Bryan Rudder also hired a coach who was not in coaching last year as former Madisonville HC Greg Morgan was named as the new leader of the Rangers. Morgan will be tabbed with turning around a Rudder program that has struggled since it opened. Moving out to West Texas, there was a bit of a surprise as Midland Greenwood hired Levelland HC Jared Sanderson to be their next HFC/AD. Sanderson had a very successful run at Levelland, where he took the Lobos to the 4A Division I State Quarterfinals. The process in Sweetwater to replace Shane Mobley is in full swing as SISD will accept applications for two more weeks. After a short list of finalists are interviewed the following week, a decision is planned to be reached by Feb. 17. The official hiring is expected at the following Board Meeting on Feb. 23, and the first day on the job for the new HFC/AD will be March 1. As of last Thursday, 70 applications had been received. One thing to keep in mind is Sweetwater’s superintendent is retiring at the end of the year, so whoever is hired will be working for a new superintendent. Corpus Christi Carroll lured Odem HFC/AD AJ Martinez away from his alma mater to take over as their new HFC. Martinez directed one of the most potent offensive attacks in South Texas at Odem and will look to elevate Carroll to new heights. A little up the coast, Edna HC Huey Chancellor, a long time veteran of Texas high school football, announced his retirement. Edna is an attractive small school job and should draw plenty of interest. There was some movement at the small school level in East Texas as late last week, Quitman hired Lone Oak DC Bryan Oakes as HFC/AD. A fun fact about Coach Oakes is that he is the son-in-law of Kansas State HFC Bill Snyder and a KSU graduate. At the large school level, Hallsville will be in search for a new head coach for the first time in twelve years as David Plunk was reassigned on Tuesday. One of Plunk’s assistants, Cody Farrell (Hallsville DC), was hired to take over at Commerce on Tuesday night. Farrell replaces Jeff Cleveland, who moved into Commerce ISD administration. In sad news out of East Texas, Tyler John Tyler mourns the death of longtime assistant coach Michael Johnson, who lost his battle with cancer on Tuesday. Johnson was a fixture in the John Tyler program and was a member of their 1973 state title team. The Prosper ISD school board voted late last week to begin construction on their second high school, which is slated to open in 2020. Explosive growth in the area has Prosper High’s enrollment well north of 2,400 students and guarantees that at least for two years, Prosper will move to Class 6A starting in 2018. The second high school, which has yet to be named, will drop both schools back to 5A likely for the 2020 realignment.
