Friday Night Five: A wild Colleyville Heritage comeback leads the way

We got a great send-off to the postseason with a lot of surprising finishes around the state. Game of the night: Colleyville Heritage 53, Richland 36 Richland, on the verge of an outright district title, led 22-7 at halftime. The Panthers went scorched earth in the second half, blitzing the Rebels on a 46-14 run. The results means Heritage, Richland and Grapevine tie for the 8-5A district title, but more importantly for the Panthers, it breathed life into a season that had gone a little stale after a valiant 41-36 losing effort against Aledo to open the year. A 49-34 loss to Grapevine seemed to signal that perhaps Joe Willis' bunch just didn't have the horses for a run this year. That's all out the window now. The three-way tie in the district just shows each of the teams that if they play their best game each week the rest of the way, they'll be very tough to beat. Team on the riseTerrell 19, Van 14 The Tigers may not have wrestled the district crown from the Vandals with the victory, but the result seems to confirm our preseason suspicion that Terrell would be a tough out once the playoffs started. The Tigers moved down from 5A and opened with a strong 26-0 win over Paris that has aged well. A narrow 21-20 loss to Kennedale is nothing to hang heads about, but a 31-21 loss to Kaufman didn't bode well for the season's trajectory. This win gets it back on course, and gives the Tigers some momentum when they need it most. Team in the holeConverse Judson 17, New Braunfels Canyon 9 The Rockets won, but that 35-28 win over Lake Travis to open the year feels like it was a long time ago. A 30-9 loss to Steele and a 44-14 loss to Smithson Valley have taken the shine off of Judson's season, and with all due respect to Canyon, this is a game the Rockets should win going away every time. Regardless of circumstances, Judson has the talent to win the region, but the way the district has gone, it's hard to see it coming together right now. Five big-time resultsRefugio 35, Shiner 0 The Bobcats are the indisputable favorite in 2A DI. What a statement. El Campo 35, Bay City 28, OT The oldest rivalry in the state goes to the team that's poised to make a playoff run. Harlingen 29, San Benito 27 The Battle of the Arroyo produces a surprise as the Cardinals wreck the Greyhounds' question for regular season perfection. Frisco Lone Star 37, Frisco Independence 13 Frisco emphatically remains Lone Star's town. Canutillo 31, El Paso Eastlake 27 There aren't many teams that have gotten better with each passing week the way that the Eagles have this year. Eye-grabbing scoreline of the nightRichmond George Ranch 35, Alief Taylor 34 Taylor has been a revelation all year, but it was the Longhorns who ruined the fun. It's a great springboard for George Ranch as it heads into its first playoffs at the 6A level, and a great reminder for Taylor that if the Lions don't bring their best every week, the dream will end much too soon.
