Week 11 is loaded with exciting and compelling games across the state. Here are the ones I’d attend. Class 6A: San Benito at Harlingen The Valley is in line for an emphatic weekend and this contest for the 32-6A title is a major reason why. San Benito is undefeated and rolling towards Region IV contention. The Greyhounds are averaging more than 40 points per game on offense while only giving up 13 points per game during district play. San Benito is the most complete Class 6A team from the Valley and an exclamation mark can be put on the regular season with a win. Harlingen can cap a tremendous district run with an upset victory at home. It’ll take creating a few turnovers and catching a break or two, but the Cardinals haven’t lost since Sep. 9 and are riding a wave of momentum into the playoffs. Class 5A: El Paso Eastlake at Canutillo An important game in El Paso takes place between an emerging Canutillo squad and preseason favorite Eastlake. Canutillo’s defense is stout. The Eagles are undefeated and have only allowed more than 20 points twice this season. After a three-point win over Bel Air on Sep. 9, Canutillo is beating opponents by an average of 30 points. Eastlake is giving up nearly 28 points per game, making it tough for the Falcons to win against quality opponents. A strong outing by the defense gives an offense scoring 44.5 points per game a shot. Class 4A: Sweetwater at Midland Greenwood Some programs aren’t used to losing in the regular season. Sweetwater was one of those programs. But a low-scoring loss to state-ranked Monahans last week dealt the Mustangs their first regular season loss since 2013. Sweetwater only scored 16 points in the three-point loss, something it hopes to raise on the road against Midland Greenwood. And Sweetwater will need points against a Rangers team that’s scored 411 points in eight games. Greenwood’s lone loss this season also came to Monahans. Class 3A: Cisco at Eastland Two top 10 teams in Class 3A Division II meet to decide a district champion and a number one seed. Cisco is coming off an eight-point victory over Tolar, while Eastland looks to pull a mild upset at home following a 63-2 demolition of Bangs. The contrasting styles and proximity make this more interesting. Cisco will try to impose its physical advantage with Eastland attempting to spread the ball out. Eastland is on a five-game winning streak. Class 2A: Refugio at Shiner An annual showdown capable of fireworks, two of the best Class 2A programs in the state square off to decide a district championship. Momentum towards a Region IV championship is also on the line, as both teams figure heavily into a future playoff projection. Shiner began the season 3-2, losing non-district games to Hallettsville and Hitchcock. The Comanches found their footing in district play, earning a signature victory over Weimar in mid-October. Refugio is a perennial title contender and 2016 is no different. A non-district loss to Class 4A Geronimo Navarro is the only blemish on the Bobcats record.
