WEEK 11 PREVIEW: Breaking down the biggest games in Texas high school football
District title games and playoff spots on the line in a huge final week of Texas high school football regular season.

Week 11 PreviewRefugio (8-1, 4-0) at Shiner (7-2, 4-0) Once again, the 15-2A Division I title and early status as the team to beat in Region IV is on the line as Refugio visits Shiner. RHS rolled past Weimar 41-0 a week ago as RB Jaylon Mascorro ran for 167 yards and three touchdowns. Refugio has certainly taken to their more physical style of play and the defense has continued to emerge, as they are allowing less than six points per game. Shiner’s powerful running game paced the Comanches to an easy 55-14 win over Ganado. RB Dadrian Taylor is a UTSA commit and brings major playmaking ability to a team that thrives on physical and tough play. These two know each other quite well, they played twice last year and split with Refugio winning the state quarterfinal matchup. Refugio’s identity has morphed to a power running and defense first squad, but they can still air it out when needed and that balance – combined with a suffocating defense – gives the Bobcats an edge in this one. Stepp’s Pick: Refugio by 10 Craven’s Pick: Refugio Max’s Pick: RefugioSan Antonio O’Connor (8-1, 4-0) vs. San Antonio Brennan (6-3, 4-0) A big Thursday night game in Northside ISD is on the docket, but the 28-6A title game is for bragging rights only. Both teams will host playoff games in bi-district thanks to playing in separate divisions, but the district crown still has meaning for these two. O’Connor’s high-powered offense has been outstanding all year as the Panthers one loss came at the hands of Steele in Week 3. They will take on a Brennan squad that has been surging as of late. The Bears got off to a slow start, but since zone play has started they have been rolling on all cylinders. The level of competition on Brennan’s zone isn’t the best however, so the jury is still out, especially when it comes to the Bears offense. I am not sure Brennan’s offense will be able to keep pace in this battle. Stepp’s Pick: San Antonio O’Connor by 12 Craven’s Pick: Brennan Max’s Pick: O’ConnorSan Benito (9-0, 6-0) at Harlingen (7-2, 6-0) The “Battle of the Arroyo” is always one of the most intense rivalry games in the state and the stakes for this battle are even higher with the 32-6A title is on the line and potentially a home playoff game, as well. If Weslaco beats Los Fresnos in other 32-6A action, then both San Benito and Harlingen move to the Division I bracket and this game will determine the top seed. If Los Fresnos wins, then San Benito goes Division II and this game is simply for bragging rights. San Benito has been the top team in the Valley this year. The Greyhounds have a diverse and balanced attack that can hit you from many angles, and the super-aggressive Harlingen defense will be a major test. Harlingen’s defense will make some big plays, and if they get RB Leo Tienda going, the Cardinals have a shot to pull the upset at home. However, I think that high risk/high reward defense is not the best idea against San Benito. Look for the ‘Hounds offense to take advantage of Harlingen’s aggressiveness and burn them deep a few times. Stepp’s Pick: San Benito by 9 Craven’s Pick: San Benito Max’s Pick: San BenitoEl Paso Eastlake (6-3, 6-1) at Canutillo (9-0, 7-0) Canutillo can wrap up an unbeaten regular season at home by taking down the team many thought would be the top 5A program in El Paso in the preseason. Eastlake’s had a good season, but the defense simply hasn’t progressed enough for the Falcons to become an elite team and a real threat to improve on their back-to-back third round runs. Canutillo’s defense, on the other hand, is not an issue as the Eagles are repeating their smashing 2014 success by getting things done with a tough defense and a grind-it-out offense that makes timely plays. If Eastlake’s offense can put some early scores up and push the tempo, they’ve got a shot to pull off the upset, but against Canutillo this year that has been easier said than done. The Eagles defense has allowed more than 17 points in just three games this year. Stepp’s Pick: Canutillo by 7 Craven’s Pick: Canutillo Max’s Pick: CanutilloFrisco Lone Star (8-1, 6-0) vs. Frisco Independence (8-1, 5-1) Most of us expected Frisco Lone Star to be playing for the district title in Week 11, but very few pegged third-year program Frisco Independence to be battling it out for that crown. But if you remember back to August, yours truly warned you to watch out for the Knights and man have they delivered!! If not for a fourth quarter collapse in Week 5 against Frisco Heritage, the Knights would be unbeaten. Kansas commit RB Dominic Williams has been a huge part of the Knights’ rise to their first playoff trip and they’ll need him to come up with a big night if they want to pull the upset. Lone Star, who played for a state title last year, is led by Utah commits QB Jason Shelley and WR Jalen Dixon and a defense that doesn’t have a ton of big names but is solid in all three levels. That unit, along with the brilliance of Shelley, is the key to the Rangers winning the 13-5A crown this week. Stepp’s Pick: Frisco Lone Star by 14 Craven’s Pick: Lone Star Max’s Pick: Lone Star [caption id="attachment_26922" align="aligncenter" width="700"]Photo by Russell Peables Photo by Russell Peables[/caption] Cisco (7-1, 4-0) at Eastland (7-2, 4-0) The more things change, the more they stay the same, and for these two Eastland County rivals it’s a district title and yearly bragging rights that are on the line. For the uninitiated, about ten miles of Interstate 20 separates these two towns. Cisco is a team that has gotten progressively better as the year has worn on, led by a punishing ground game and hard-hitting defense. They were tested last week, but survived a game squad from Tolar, winning 34-26. Eastland started the year 2-2 under new HC James Morton, but they’ve won five in a row. The Mavericks have played their best ball late in the year, drilling a good Coleman squad 30-14 two weeks ago and handling Bangs 63-2 last week. Eastland is a bit more wide open offensively, and they’ll try to keep Cisco off balance with the passing game. I expect an all-out war in the Big Country Friday as these two rivals always deliver in front of what is sure to be a full house. Stepp’s Pick: Cisco by 2 Craven’s Pick: Cisco Max’s Pick: EastlandBurnet (7-2, 2-2) at Waco La Vega (9-0, 4-0) Burnet is a really solid ball club, but the fact that this squad is likely to finish fourth in 13-4A Division I reflects the depth and power in the district. Burnet has dropped district games to China Spring and Liberty Hill (by 36 and 21 points respectively), yet this is a team that likely will win multiple playoff games. They close the year with Waco La Vega, who now owns a 25-game winning streak and who already owns close wins over the two teams who knocked Burnett off. I expect La Vega to come out with their defense and make a big statement as they gear up for another playoff run. Stepp’s Pick: Waco La Vega by 24 Craven’s Pick: Waco La Vega Max’s Pick: Waco La VegaBosqueville (8-1, 4-0) at Mart (9-0, 4-0) The past few years, Bosqueville has been one of the state’s best 2A programs, yet the Bulldogs have struggled to knock off area rival Mart. In what was considered a down year for the Panthers in 2015, they still managed to blow Bosqueville away 55-0. They’ll get another chance this week in Mart, and if their impressive 59-14 tune-up over Itasca was any indication, Coach Zander’s squad is ready for the battle. Mart was tested in their first three games of the year, playing 3A opponents the Panthers won by 2, 13 and 7 points. Since that time, MHS has won every game by at least 34 points (last week’s 41-7 win over Italy was the closest win for MHS since Week 3). That is a classic sign of a team peaking as the season winds down. Stepp’s Pick: Mart by 16 Craven’s Pick: Mart Max’s Pick: MartCorpus Christi Flour Bluff (5-4, 4-0) at Corpus Christi Calallen (8-1, 5-0) The champions of each zone in District 30-5A meet up for bragging rights on the Coastal Bend, but the story here is Calallen HC Phil Danaher, who is going for the all-time national wins record held by legendary G.A. Moore. Flour Bluff really struggled in non-district play, but since district play the Hornets have been rolling. Only Corpus Christi Carroll tested FBHS in a 41-27 game, but battling a Calallen team still upset about nearly having to forfeit a pair of wins earlier in the year will be tough. Wildcat Stadium in North Corpus will be an absolute nuthouse; expect an overflow crowd who will be on hand to potentially witness history. Flour Bluff is good enough to play spoiler, but Calallen is on a mission and they simply won’t be denied at home. Stepp’s Pick: Corpus Christi Calallen by 14 Craven’s Pick: Calallen Max’s Pick: CalallenEl Campo (9-0, 5-0) at Bay City (6-3, 4-1) It’s the 113th meeting of these longtime rivals, and for El Campo it’s about avoiding a letdown after taking down Stafford a week ago to clinch at least a share of the district title. In the Ricebirds’ 31-20 win, Nery Enriquez and Deadrick Holloway ran for 356 yards and four touchdowns as the physical style of El Campo was too much for Stafford. Bay City has quietly put together a solid season. The Blackcats have won four games in a row after dropping the district opener, including a 30-20 win over Sealy last week to put themselves in contention for at least a share of the district crown. BCHS will try to push the tempo and spread El Campo out, but the Ricebirds are a veteran and playoff tested team and Bay City is still learning how to win. El Campo teaches the still learning Blackcats an important lesson before the start of the postseason this week. Stepp’s Pick: El Campo by 18 Craven’s Pick: El Campo Max’s Pick: El Campo [caption id="attachment_26925" align="aligncenter" width="700"]Photo by Gary Sanderson Photo by Gary Sanderson[/caption] Highland Park (8-1, 6-0) at Wylie East (6-3, 5-1) Highland Park will visit Wylie, a place where in the past they’ve had success, but the games often have been close. This matchup has a chance to not be close if Wylie East’s do-it-all man Eno Benjamin doesn’t play. He’s taking an absolute beating this year with the attention of opposing defenses constantly centered on him. If he goes, he is good enough to keep the Raiders in it, but if he sits, Highland Park’s multiple offense will simply blow past an East team that lacks weapons outside of Benjamin and his talents. Stepp’s Pick: Highland Park by 24 Craven’s Pick: Highland Park Max’s Pick: Highland ParkColleyville Heritage (6-3, 5-1) at Richland (9-0, 6-0) Colleyville Heritage has had a bit of an up and down season thus far, but the Panthers can accomplish their first goal of the year with a win over undefeated Richland for a share of the district title. Richland, on the other hand, has been nothing short of sensational. The Rebels offense, led by QB Trae Self, has put up monster numbers all season and the defense has been much better than expected. It’s been a long time since Richland has had an unbeaten regular season, and the Rebels are emerging as a legitimate threat in 5A Region I. Heritage can win this game if they don’t turn the ball over (which was a problem in their district loss to Grapevine). However, Richland just has the feel of a team of destiny. This will be my Friday night game and I’m looking forward to seeing these two potential contenders for a regional title. Stepp’s Pick: Richland by 4 Craven’s Pick: Richland Max’s Pick: Colleyville HeritageMineola (7-2, 5-0) at Winnsboro (6-3, 3-2) After dropping their first two games of the year to powerful 4A programs, Mineola has rattled off seven straight wins in dominant fashion, the closest being a 36-3 win over Wills Point in Week 3. The ‘Jackets have been nothing short of impressive during district play, including last week’s 63-17 blowout of Commerce. Winnsboro had the week off after they knocked off Commerce 43-21. The Red Raiders haven’t quite clinched a playoff spot, so a win would be optimal, but they can also get in with a loss if the right teams in their district lose. Mineola’s dominance has been quite impressive and they look to be a real contender for a state title in 3A Division I. Stepp’s Pick: Mineola by 28 Craven’s Pick: Mineola Max’s Pick: MineolaVan (9-0, 5-0) at Terrell (7-2, 4-1) The last hurdle to Van’s unbeaten regular season is a playoff tested and tough Terrell squad. The Vandals will need to avoid a letdown after a big win last week over Kaufman, 33-14. QB Garrett Mosley had a monster night, accounting for 452 yards and five touchdowns to pace Van to the big win. Terrell got a hard-fought win over a desperate Crandall squad 28-21 last week as Elijah McQueen ran for 123 yards and a touchdown to lead Terrell to the win. Terrell’s speed on the defensive side of the ball could be a challenge for Van, but the Vandals seem to have enough firepower to make things happen against a good but not elite Terrell team. The last time Van posted a 10-0 regular season they were beaten in the first round of the playoffs, so the Vandals will look to try to avoid that fate next week. Stepp’s Pick: Van by 14 Craven’s Pick: Van Max’s Pick: VanEl Paso Chapin (8-1, 5-1) at El Paso Andress (7-2, 5-1) After rolling through the competition in El Paso, Chapin was stunned last week by El Paso Burges 16-13. Chapin’s defense again had a great night, but the offense didn’t do enough and that lack of offensive production has to start being a concern as the Huskies head towards the playoffs. Andress, who lost a lot of their talent when Chapin opened, has been solid, and since a stunning loss to Bowie, Coach Woodruff’s squad has been dominating. However, I don’t think Andress’ offense will be able to get into a rhythm against a Chapin squad that will likely be eager to erase the bitter taste of the first loss of the year. Stepp’s Pick: El Paso Chapin by 14 Craven’s Pick: Chapin Max’s Pick: Chapin [caption id="attachment_26923" align="aligncenter" width="700"]Photo by Darice Farris Photo by Darice Farris[/caption] Port Arthur Memorial (8-0, 6-0) at Vidor (7-2, 5-1) Port Arthur Memorial will look to cap an undefeated regular season with a win over always tough Vidor. Memorial’s offense rolled past Baytown Lee in a 49-10 rout as RB’s Elijah Hines and Kobi Martin combined for 213 yards and four touchdowns on just 13 carries. The focus this week will be on the defense as the Titans will try to contain the Vidor Slot-T attack. Look for Vidor to put together a few long drives, but I’m not sure Vidor’s defense can deal with the speed that Port Arthur Memorial brings to the table. Stepp’s Pick: Port Arthur Memorial by 22 Craven’s Pick: Port Arthur Memorial Max’s Pick: Port Arthur MemorialNederland (4-5, 4-3) at Port Neches-Groves (8-1, 6-1) One of the state’s best rivalries (in terms of attendance and intensity) renews at PNG this weekend and for Nederland, plenty is on the line. The Bulldogs, who had to forfeit a district loss earlier in the year, can still get into the playoffs with a victory, but a loss could potentially knock them out of the postseason. Nederland has won three in a row after last week’s 35-21 win over Lumberton, when Devon Simmons ran for 182 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Containing PNG’s potent attack is going to be a challenge as sophomore signal caller Roschon Johnson has accounted for 26 total touchdowns this year. That explosive offense has carried the way for the Indians this year, and should lead them to an impressive 9-1 finish. The key is: will PNG be Division I or Division II? If Nederland makes the playoffs, PNG goes Division II. If the Bulldogs miss, PNG could slide to Division I. Stepp’s Pick: Port Neches-Groves by 14 Craven’s Pick: Port Neches-Groves Max’s Pick: Port Neches-GrovesPflugerville Connally (8-1, 6-1) at Georgetown (7-2, 5-2) A lot of eyes in the state will be on this game as it’s dripping with playoff implications. Georgetown needs a win to get into the playoffs. A loss means the Eagles could potentially be looking at losing out on a three-way tiebreaker for the third straight year. Georgetown’s fate could also impact Cedar Park as they could swing down to Division II or move to Division I depending on who makes the playoffs. Connally bounced back nicely from their loss to Cedar Park two weeks ago with an easy 62-6 win over Bastrop Cedar Creek. The Cougars have plenty to play for, as well, as a win would put them in solid position to be the top seed out of 19-5A in the Division I bracket. Stepp’s Pick: Pflugerville Connally by 7 Craven’s Pick: Georgetown Max’s Pick: GeorgetownAustin Bowie (8-1, 4-0) at San Marcos (6-3, 4-0) The 14-6A title is on the line down in Hays County as perennial playoff team Bowie hooks up with up-and-coming San Marcos. From a playoff positioning standpoint, this game doesn’t mean too much as these two will be in separate brackets come playoff time. The good news for both is that they will be the top seed in their respective divisions and will host a playoff game. Bowie had no trouble last week, rolling past Austin Akins 59-14. The Bulldogs offense has been clicking on all cylinders lately, the key this week will be their defense containing the tough ground-oriented offense that San Marcos brings to the table. The Rattlers have been masters of close wins in district play, winning their last three games by a combined ten points. That run ends this week at home as I expect Bowie to have their way with the Rattlers. Stepp’s Pick: Austin Bowie by 17 Craven’s Pick: Bowie Max’s Pick: BowieShepherd (7-1, 3-0) at Bellville (7-2, 3-0) Unlike at the larger school level, there’s still seeding on the line in a lot of small school games as the divisions are pre-determined. So more than just bragging rights are on the line in 11-4A Division II when Shepherd and Bellville meet up. Each team has totally dominated competition in this district; Shepherd has won their three district games by an average of 48.3 points while Bellville is winning district games by over 51 points per contest. The biggest difference I see between these two teams is Bellville is much more battle tested in non-district. Bellville’s non-district slate included Cameron Yoe, Bay City, Stafford, Sealy, Wharton and Taylor. All are playoff teams with a combined record of 38-18, while Shepherds’ non-district opponents were good but there were a few lower tier 3A programs mixed in. Bellville’s defense and physical style of play prove to be too much in this one. Stepp’s Pick: Bellville by 10 Craven’s Pick: Shepherd Max’s Pick: Bellville [caption id="attachment_26921" align="aligncenter" width="700"]Photo by Artie Guerrero Photo by Artie Guerrero[/caption] East Bernard (8-1, 5-0) at Boling (8-1, 5-0) It’ll be an old school slugfest as East Bernard and their Wing-T attack hook up with Boling, who utilizes the Slot-T offense. The winner brings home the 14-3A Division II title and the top seed heading to the playoffs. The Brahmas have been on fire the past two weeks, blasting past Bloomington and Danbury by a combined 120-0. Boling has been pretty stout themselves and a win over longtime nemesis East Bernard would only add to their confidence heading into the playoffs. East Bernard has the big game experience and pedigree, so I’ll give EBHS a slight edge but I have a feeling these two could meet again in four weeks. Stepp’s Pick: East Bernard by 3 Craven’s Pick: East Bernard Max’s Pick: East BernardLeonard (8-1, 5-0) at Gunter (9-0, 5-0) After losing a heartbreaker to 4A Nevada Community to open the season, Leonard has been quite impressive. In fact, the Tigers have only played one game closer than three touchdowns during this eight-game streak. They will face their biggest test of the year this week as the 6-3A Division II title is on the line against undefeated Gunter. The Tigers have also dominated recently as their last five wins have all been by at least 29 points. Gunter’s certainly got a better resumé, the Tigers own wins over Howe, Pottsboro and Pilot Point – not a bad group of wins there. Stepp’s Pick: Gunter by 11 Craven’s Pick: Gunter Max’s Pick: GunterParis (6-3, 4-0) at Paris North Lamar (5-4, 2-2) The 31st Lamar County Crosstown Showdown has some extra meaning this year as both Paris and North Lamar are likely playoff bound. We know Paris is for real. The Wildcats, after a slow start to the season, can wrap up an undisputed district title. The always talented Wildcats rolled past Anna a week ago 41-0. North Lamar, under new HC and alum Aaron Emeyabbi, is flying high after back-to-back wins over Princeton and Quinlan Ford. North Lamar hasn’t officially clinched a spot yet, but a win would do the trick. Paris has dominated the rivalry in recent years; the Wildcats’ speed has always caused the Panthers problems. The game will be much closer this year as the NLHS staff has brought a new attitude to the north side of town, but at least for this year, Paris High has a bit too much. Stepp’s Pick: Paris by 10 Craven’s Pick: Paris Max’s Pick: ParisWellington (8-1, 3-1) at Clarendon (8-1, 3-1) Second place and a better playoff seed is on the line Friday night in Clarendon as a pair of 8-1 teams square off. The Skyrockets have been dominating since the opening loss in district play to Memphis, winning their next three games by a combined score of 170-7!! Clarendon jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead in their showdown last week against Memphis, but the Broncos had no answer for the physical ground attack that Memphis employs. I expect more of the same from Wellington this week as they will try to physically wear down a smaller Clarendon bunch. Stepp’s Pick: Wellington by 14 Craven’s Pick: Wellington Max’s Pick: WellingtonDumas (8-1, 5-1) at Amarillo (6-2, 5-1) There is quite a bit riding on the line for both of these teams heading into the District 3-5A title game. The winner gets the district title and top seed in their respective division, while the loser could potentially fall to a number two seed in the playoffs if things break a certain way. Both teams love to run the football, they just get it done with different methods as Dumas likes to work from the spread while Amarillo stays under center and goes old school with the Wing-T. Dumas doesn’t have much depth and they aren’t real big in the trenches, and that’s where Amarillo will have a significant edge going into this contest. Stepp’s Pick: Amarillo by 12 Craven’s Pick: Amarillo Max’s Pick: Amarillo [caption id="attachment_26924" align="aligncenter" width="700"]Photo by Russell Peables Photo by Russell Peables[/caption] Sweetwater (7-1, 4-1) at Midland Greenwood (7-1, 4-1) Sweetwater suffered their first regular season loss since 2013 last week in a 19-16 defeat to Monahans. Sweetwater’s defense couldn’t get the Monahans offense off the field and the Lobos simply shortened the game and kept the pace to their liking. Sweetwater had a pair of potential scoring drives end in the Monahans red zone on downs, as well. Since losing to Monahans three weeks ago, Greenwood’s offense has been on a roll, scoring over 66 points per game the last two weeks. The Rangers have some defensive concerns and against a team as powerful as Sweetwater, that’s not a good formula. Expect at least 100 points between the two teams. Stepp’s Pick: Sweetwater by 10 Craven’s Pick: Midland Greenwood Max’s Pick: SweetwaterGroveton (8-1, 4-0) at Lovelady (7-1, 3-1) Groveton has one of the top offenses in the state. Led by QB Glenn Thornton, the Indians are four points away from a 9-0 start. They clinched at least a share of the district title, but a win this week would guarantee the top seed from the district and not put GHS in a potential tiebreaker scenario. Last week, Groveton knocked off Centerville 34-27 as Thornton tossed five touchdown passes to cap a late rally for the victory. Lovelady bounced back from their loss to Centerville two weeks ago with an easy victory over West Hardin 47-0. Lovelady can get in on at least a share of the district title this week with a win, and in the right points scenario they could actually earn the top seed in the playoffs. Stepp’s Pick: Groveton by 5 Craven’s Pick: Lovelady Max’s Pick: GrovetonSmithson Valley (6-2, 5-1) at New Braunfels (6-3, 4-2) There may not be a hotter team in the state at the moment than Smithson Valley. Since a close seven-point loss to Cibolo Steele to open district play, the Rangers have been rolling. They hit their high mark last week in a dominating 44-14 win over Converse Judson. QB Josh Adkins had two passing scores and three rushing touchdowns and the SVHS defense held Judson to just 146 yards of offense on the night. They are now locked in on the Division I side of the bracket after New Braunfels knocked off Schertz Clemens last week. It was a big win for the Unicorns who are peaking at the right time, but Smithson Valley – at least for the moment – is playing at a state title contender level. Stepp’s Pick: Smithson Valley by 19 Craven’s Pick: Smithson Valley Max’s Pick: Smithson ValleyMansfield Lake Ridge (5-4, 3-3) at Waxahachie (6-3, 3-3) The final playoff spot in 10-5A is on the line at Lumpkins Stadium as two teams who have stumbled down the stretch will try to salvage their season. Lake Ridge, who played for a state title a year ago, has lost their last two, including a 35-7 defeat to Mansfield Timberview last week. Lake Ridge turned the ball over three times, and their inability to consistently generate production on the ground has put a lot of the offense on the shoulders of junior QB Jason Bean. Bean’s been good, but Lake Ridge has to find a way to consistently run the football if they want to make the playoffs for a third straight year. Waxahachie has dropped three games in a row, and last week’s 42-35 loss to Lancaster was a heartbreaker. The Indians were +3 in turnovers and got a big game from both Jalen Reagor and Kenedy Snell, but in the second half the big plays stopped and ‘Hachie wasn’t able to sustain drives. Big plays are a staple of the Waxahachie attack and they’ll break a few, but they need more persistence with the running game, led by Eris Miles. If Waxahachie can sustain drives and then mix in the timely big plays, I like them to get Coach Kitna his first playoff appearance in Texas. Stepp’s Pick: Waxahachie by 8 Craven’s Pick: Waxahachie Max’s Pick: WaxahachieMay (9-0, 2-0) at Gordon (6-3, 1-1) May has rolled to a 9-0 start and the Tigers have hopes of a deep playoff run, and they’ll look to take down 6-3 Gordon on the road. May rolled past Lingleville 85-37 as Cameron King ran for 226 yards and seven touchdowns to lead the Tigers attack. Gordon dropped a 58-54 heartbreaker to six-man newcomer Gorman last week. May, I anticipate, will keep it rolling with another big victory this week. Stepp’s Pick: May by 24 Craven’s Pick: May Max’s Pick: May
