Friday Night Five: A shootout down South leads the way

Beeville Jones has been transformed with the arrival of new head coach Jerry Bomar. The offensive spark has also led to the emergence of receiver Waydale Jones, who was a Mr. Texas Football Player of the Week nominee last week with 14 catches for 249 yards and 3 touchdowns. The two squads combined for a thriller on Friday night, and if you were lucky enough to be in attendance, you got a treat. The Trojans got out to a 20-point lead before Sinton came roaring back with 48 points in the final two quarters. The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth affair, but Sinton held on. Both quarterbacks spun it. Justin Gomez had 421 yards passing and 7 TDs (four to Jones) for the Trojans, and Devyn Orta threw for 448 yards and 4 TDs. Team on the riseRound Rock Cedar Ridge 28, Temple 14 We talked with Cedar Ridge head coach Shawn Bell on DCTF Live about the rise of his Raiders, and they just keep proving their mettle. Anytime you can snag a win from the Wildcats, it's noteworthy. Cedar Ridge, led by QB Garrett Sharp and RB CJ Rittenhouse, have handled Temple, Killeen Shoemaker, Waco Midway and New Braunfels Canyon with relative ease this year, though the latter three much more so than the former. The Austin area remains the land of Lake Travis, Westlake and Cedar Park. The Raiders' start suggests their ready to be part of that conversation. Team in the holeRound Rock Westwood 34, Cedar Park Vista Ridge 0 Last year's 5A DI state semifinalist has found tough sledding in 6A. The Rangers opened the season with a promising 32-7 win over C.C. Flour Bluff, but it's rough since then. Vista Ridge fell 45-7 to Dripping Springs, 35-21 to Austin Bowie, and then got shutout against the Warriors. Rodney Vincent's had to replace a lot of great starters from that 2015 team, and if anyone knows how to get things turned around, it's him. Still, this has to be a tough spot after the heights reached just a few months ago. Five big-time resultsThe Woodlands 42, Richmond George Ranch 14 It's official: The Highlanders are laying claim to the Houston-area 6A crown this year. Denton Ryan 51, Frisco Lone Star 34 In a battle for separation in Class 5A, the Raiders prove too much for a very good Lone Star team. Cibolo Steele 24, Smithson Valley 17 Maybe the most surprising result of the night, if you forget that the Rangers have the pedigree and ability to shut down any team on any night. Albany 34, Anson 0 Well, any hunch that the Lions were going to fall off after losing that great senior class last year is a bad one. Iraan 24, Mason 21 In case you weren't sure, the Braves are for real. Eye-grabbing scoreline of the nightLevelland 77, Brownfield 31 One week after losing to Andrews 77-76, Nick Gerber and company score 77 in their own win. In four games this season, the Lobos are average 64.5 points per game. If you see them, bring your popcorn.
