EVERY WEEK, DCTF SENIOR WRITER MIKE CRAVEN WILL GIVE HIS FOUR OBSERVATIONS, ONE QUESTION AND ONE PREDICTION FROM THE PREVIOUS WEEK OF FOOTBALL IN THE LONE STAR STATE.

In Week 1, Lone Star State teams went 10-2 with one of those losses occurring to another Texas school. Here is the 4-1-1. ObservationsRough night for the Red Raiders Texas Tech still can’t play defense. Despite scoring more than 50 points, the Red Raiders returned back home with a loss to Arizona State. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes nearly had 600 yards of total offense in the game, staying on pace to break 6,000 total yards on the season. Texas Tech’s offense was spectacular at times, but no amount of real winning will take place in Lubbock until the defense improves. Kliff Kingsbury knows how to attract offensive talent to Lubbock. Now, he needs defenders to make Texas Tech a true contender in Texas. TCU's still figuring things out TCU was bad. Then TCU was good again. Then TCU was bad. The Horned Frogs looked sluggish in the Week 1 win over South Dakota State. That sloppiness carried over to the beginning of the overtime loss to Arkansas. It was a chance for Gary Patterson’s team – one of the favorites to win the Big 12 – to earn a significant win over an SEC program on the rise. Instead, mental errors and a blocked field goal erased TCU’s comeback efforts. Seth Littrell gets his first win North Texas earned its first win under first-year head coach Seth Littrell and might have found a quarterback of the future in the process. The running attack and defense are the reason the Mean Green knocked off Bethune-Cookman, but freshman Mason Fine was adequate in his first start and avoided mistakes. It’s a good sign for Littrell, who needs a dynamic passer to get his offense rolling. Baylor struggles, but keeps the momentum Baylor looks beatable with Seth Russell struggling. The offseason troubles hurt the depth of the Bears, but the front-line talent is still remaining to make a push towards a Big 12 title in 2016 with favorites like Oklahoma, TCU and Oklahoma State already showing weaknesses in losses. The Bears are still undefeated after a win against SMU, but it wasn’t pretty and it took more than two quarters for the Baylor offense to figure it out. Question Is Texas A&M the second-best team in the SEC? Alabama is clearly the best team in football, but the conference isn’t enjoying its usual success. Auburn is still struggling on offense. Georgia and Tennessee both struggled with FCS schools in one of their two games. Florida doesn’t look like a contender. Mississippi State isn’t great and Arkansas looked less than perfect down the stretch in an overtime win against TCU. LSU is in shambles on offense. That leaves Texas A&M and maybe Ole Miss as the next in line to dethrone Alabama. Prediction The Texas Longhorns will enter the Red River Rivalry with an undefeated record and a chance to break the national top 5 with a win over Oklahoma. I’m all-in on Shane Buechele.
