LOOKING FOR A QUICK SUMMARY OF FRIDAY NIGHT'S RESULTS AND WHAT THEY COULD MEAN GOING FORWARD? WE'VE GOT YOU COVERED VERY LATE EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT (OR VERY EARLY SATURDAY MORNING).

Friday Night Five: Who wants to be a 6A title favorite?

[caption id="attachment_25237" align="alignright" width="350"] Judson QB Julon Williams (Photo by Diana Porter)[/caption] Question of the night: Who wants to be the 6A title favorite? After three weeks of action, we’ve gotten a good look at the state’s heavyweights. Not a great look, not a complete look, but enough to size a few things up. What stands out is the lack of a clear title favorite. We were a little caught off guard by what happened to DeSoto tonight. The Eagles had to fight off a Midland squad ready for the fight in a 49-43 win. Credit to the Bulldogs and head coach Craig Yenzer for throwing some haymakers. And in DeSoto’s defense, Todd Peterman’s bunch has set the bar high with their performances this year. The problem is we’re still searching for a dominant team to keep reeling off next-level performances and we haven’t gotten that yet. Here’s what the rest of our 6A Top 10 did: No. 2 Allen pulled away from Coppell late, 42-20. Converse Judson pounded S.A. Roosevelt 66-20 on Thursday (and has a case for the most convincing resumé thus far). Lake Travis cruised by Dallas Jesuit 42-10. Westlake blew out Pflugerville with Sam Ehlinger still on the sidelines. Cibolo Steele plays S.A. O’Connor tomorrow. Katy got thumped 26-3 by The Woodlands. Cedar Hill blew out Mesquite Horn 59-21. Euless Trinity beat Colleyville Heritage 35-21. Pearland suffered the wrath of 5A Manvel, 36-0. Every team has shown it can put together a dominant game, but aside from Judson (who we’ll learn even more about in two weeks when it’s time to play Steele), each team also has a result that’s a little bit of a head scratcher. It’s not the end of the world, we’ll learn more in the coming weeks, and most of these teams have looked strong, just not unstoppable. We thought we might have some early separation, and instead, we have the makings of a free-for-all. Which will be plenty entertaining. Team on the rise We’re officially keeping a close eye on Henderson, which blew out Pittsburg 71-28, and has run away in all three wins so far this season (the other two over Atlanta and Tatum) by a combined score of 160-54. Mercy. There are bigger games coming up. Pine Tree and Chapel Hill are the only teams sitting between the Lions and their Sep. 30 date with Carthage. May want to get tickets to that one. Team in the holeNavasota fell to Waller 24-12, and is now 0-3 to start the season. It’s a pretty drastic drop from the heights achieved in the last few years. With Mineola righting its ship with a 36-3 win over Wills Point, and Liberty-Eylau playing much more competitive football despite its 0-3 start, the Rattlers are the team we had the highest expectations for that has the most ground to make up going forward. Five big-time resultsManvel 36, Pearland 0 The Mavericks are clearly the 5A DI favorite. They’ve put together an absurd resume. Waxahachie 50, Ennis 20 For the second year in a row, the 287 rivalry goes to the Indians. China Spring 63, Cameron Yoe 13 No shame for the Yoemen to lose to a 4A opponent, but this was a thumping that makes China Spring a much more intriguing team going forward. George West 49, Odem 12 Well, so much for the high-flying Owls’ hot start. It’s a statement win for the Longhorns, who are off to a very nice 3-0 start. Yorktown 28, Bruni 7 The Badgers served notice that they’d be tough this year, particularly with a strong OT win over Falls City, but Yorktown was flying under the radar. Not anymore. Unreal scoreline of the night Andrews 77, Levelland 76, OT That’s good enough for FOURTH all-time for most points scored by both teams in a single game. (We’ll get that updated.)
