Five uncommitted Texas prospects to keep an eye on during National Signing Day

Photo by Keith RamseyMost college destinations are known to the public by the time National Signing Day rolls around. These days, prospects start doing research early in high school, making it easier, in most cases, to pick a school before February. Some guys take the decision down to the wire, though, and here are five impact Texas prospects choosing a school tomorrow. Brandon Jones, DB, Nacogdoches The best safety prospect in Texas decides on national television Wednesday. The rumblings are that Jones will wind up as a Texas Longhorn, but he’s also taken official visits to Texas A&M, Baylor and Arkansas. There are faster safeties in Texas, but none with the combination of skills as Jones. He’s a heavy-hitter in run support and improved as a coverage safety as a senior. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound safety is a four-star prospect and ranked 95th in the country, according to Rivals.com. Texas and Texas A&M are the favorites, but Baylor could be the surprise. Craven’s Pick: TexasDeontay Anderson, DB, Manvel If Jones isn’t the best safety prospect from Texas in 2016, Deontay Anderson is. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound safety has the ideal frame to play safety at the next level. He has incredible range, can play centerfield, matchup with speedy wide receivers and big tight ends and can hurt offenses if the ball ever finds its way to him. Anderson is a willing tackler, but he’s a special player when he’s allowed to roam free and go make plays on the ball. His combination of speed and size is very rare. Craven’s Pick: Ole MissJeffrey McCulloch, LB, Aldine Davis An argument could be made that Jeffrey McCulloch is the best linebacker in the state of Texas. He’s set to announce on National Signing Day and all indications point to him joining Charlie Strong’s program in Austin. McCulloch is the rare middle linebacker who can just as easily take on a block in the box as he can chase down a ball carrier on a sweep. His instincts are off the charts and his athleticism is still improving. Craven’s Pick: TexasJared Mayden, CB, Sachse The talented all-around cornerback was once an Oregon commit. The Ducks are still in play for his services, but trends are suggesting Mayden may go north to play for Oklahoma. Mayden is obviously athletic, but it is his technique and feel for the game that set him apart. The polish in his game should allow him to make an immediate impact. Craven’s Pick: OklahomaChris Daniels, DT, Euless Trinity Daniels is another prospect once committed to another school that could end up in Austin. The 6-foot-3, 300-pound defensive tackle was committed to Oklahoma until two weeks ago. He’d be a much-needed defensive tackle for Texas, which missed out on guys like Ed Oliver and Kendell Jones. Daniels isn’t as explosive as those two, but he can play one- and three-technique at defensive tackle. Craven’s Pick: Texas
