Each bracket is now down to four teams as we inch closer to the Texas high school football state championships in Houston. Austin/San Antonio alive. We spent half the season debating whether Houston schools had what it took to knock DFW from its perch atop Class 6A and Class 5A, but the true competition for DFW may come from schools in Austin and San Antonio. Out of the eight teams remaining in Class 6A, Austin and San Antonio are responsible for two each. Westlake and Converse Judson advanced in DI, while Lake Travis and Cibilo Steele won regions in DII. In Class 5A, Cedar Park and Vista Ridge won regional titles. Vista Ridge earned some revenge against Vandegrift, while Cedar Park looked beatable in a win over Calallen. If there are people out there still thinking Austin/San Antonio is thriving due to regional makeups, the teams get chances to prove a point this week in some key games. Westlake is the next team up in Allen’s march back towards a state championship. Steele will take on Katy in a rematch of last year’s Class 6A DII semifinals. The Lake Travis/Mansfield game could end up being the most exciting one this week. Cuero on a surge. It isn’t like seeing Cuero win a region in football is shocking, but not many people thought it’d happen entering the 2015 playoffs. Just like Vista Ridge did against Vandegrift, the Gobblers got some revenge on the way to winning Region IV in Class 4A DII. Cuero lost five times in the regular season, including a 14-10 loss to Sinton during district play. Cuero came out ready to play and made the right adjustments, because the Gobblers strolled into a semifinal matchup with West Orange-Stark after beating Sinton, 28-0. Cameron Yoe still rolling. With Allen’s and Gilmer’s streaks going on, Cameron Yoe is flying under-the-radar despite going for its fourth straight state championship. The Yoemen shocked most people by winning it in 2014 with a younger squad, but this year’s team is doing exactly what is expected. The wins haven’t always come easy this postseason, but Cameron Yoe finds a way to win thanks to a lot of experience. The Yoemen won their region again, and will take on a surging Mathis team in the semifinals.
