Upon Further Review: Sizing up the biggest results from the weekend
The area round carved out some major paths for a few teams to reach NRG Stadium in December.

The programs around the state that remain didn’t disappoint in the second week of playoff contests. Allen survives DeSoto did everything it could to knock off the three-time kings of the Class 6A-D1 world, but Allen showed championship grit and got a stroke of luck to continue its march towards a fourth crown in as many years. Desoto, a team wildly inconsistent in 2015, put together its best performance of its season, but a missed extra point ended a comeback attempt. Allen’s winning streak is now up to 55 with a game against Arlington Martin this week, a team who knocked off DeSoto to start the season. Denton, Leander ISD have big weekends The Independent school districts of Denton and Leander are a combined 11-1 after two weeks of playoff action. The LISD schools were expected to win, but Denton pulled off two boastful victories with Denton Ryan advancing to the regional semifinals with a 10-point win over South Grand Prairie and a Denton Guyer win over Southlake Carroll. Both could be considered mild upsets, but Guyer was arguably the most impressive team in the state this week, beating a Southlake Carroll team fresh off a bi-district win over two-time defending champion Cedar Hill. Most considered the winner of Cedar Hill/Southlake Carroll to control Region I of Class 6A-D2, but Guyer’s running attack had other plans in the 55-48 win. Cedar Park slowed down Chervil Tivy’s offense to cruise to a victory. The Timberwolves defense allowed just 14 points to an Antlers offense averaging around 55 points per game in 2015. In the Class 5A-D1 bracket, Vandegrift and Vista Ridge beat their opponents by a combined score of 119-28. Austin, San Antonio impress in Class 6A The Dallas and Fort Worth area are the current holders of both Class 6A crowns and most of the talk surrounding a dethroning involves Houston schools like Katy. Teams from San Antonio and Austin made an impression this weekend. Cibolo Steele and Judson strolled through the bi-district round, but that was expected in Region IV for both programs entering the season, but the way both teams dispatched of area schools was impressive. Westlake rolled past The Woodlands to set up a game against a North Mesquite team that escaped past Shoemaker, while Lake Travis took control of Region II in Class 6A-D2 with an impressive win over Spring Westfield. The Cavaliers take on Waco Midway in the third round, a team they handily beat earlier this year.
