The real fun starts in a few days when the state playoffs kickoff, but there was a lot to gain from the last week of district action. 1. Pearland claimed a district championship with a 27-24 victory over Manvel. Pearland scored all 10 fourth quarter points to rally towards a victory after entering the third quarter with a seven-point deficit. Both teams remain ranked in the top 10 in Class 6A in virtually every poll. It was the second time this season the undefeated Pearland team was tested. The Oilers won an overtime game against Dawson earlier in district play. Pearland takes on West Brook in the first round of the playoffs. It was the first loss for Manvel since a Week 1 tilt with Westfield. Manvel takes on Channelview this week. 2. The lone shock at the top of Class 5A was Vandegrift’s loss to Georgetown. It was a clutch win for Georgetown, needing a win against a ranked team to make the playoffs, but the Eagles were able to do it in impressive fashion. The worst part of the night for Vandegrift didn’t even take place on the field. Wide receiver Paxton Segina suffered a head injury and was taken to the hospital from the game on Friday night. Luckily, the Rice commit relayed on Twitter that he is making a recovery. 3. Henderson ended Kilgore’s seven-game winning streak with a 30-10 victory. It was a bittersweet win for a Henderson team that likely came one point away from making the playoffs in a 28-27 loss to Chapel Hill earlier in district play. Despite this loss, Kilgore still captured a district crown in one of the toughest districts in the state. Kilgore will try to begin a new winning streak with a bi-district playoff matchup against Huffman-Hargrave. 4. Kirbyville made a statement in Class 3A-D1 by winning a district title with a victory over East Chambers. Kirbyville is now on a nine-game winning streak after dropping the opener against Bridge City. Both Kirbyville and East Chambers are in position to chase a state championship, but Kirbyville enters the playoffs with a ton of momentum after the 30-14 road victory.
