There was plenty of action last week despite a multitude of games around the state being played on Thursday or Saturday due to the rain. There weren’t a ton of big-time matchups, but a lot of the games set up showdowns for the final week of the season. 1. One of the biggest in the state this coming week will be between Crosby and C.E. King High School. The Cougars of Crosby will enter the game at 9-0 and undefeated in district after knocking off Porter, 35-7. The Cougars have gone relatively untested in district play outside of an overtime win over New Caney. King is also undefeated in district, coasting through each team. The Panthers have won every district game by double-digits outside of a four-point victory over Barbers Hill. King’s lone loss this season came in non-district play to Magnolia. 2. Kilgore clinched District 9-4A Div. 1 – one of the toughest districts in the entire state – with a thumping win over an improved Brownsboro program. Mike Wood’s team won seven straight games after losing to Nacogdoches and Flour Bluff start the season. The Bulldogs clinched the district with a game against Henderson still on the schedule. It was a great turnaround for a program that finished 4-7 in 2014 after being a state finalist in 2013. 3. Cedar Ridge took a slight set back in the state rankings with a loss to Round Rock two weeks ago, but stormed back with a convincing victory over Hendrickson over the weekend. It was the first loss for Hendrickson since falling to Converse Judson in the season opener. The Cedar Ridge victory leaves Round Rock, Cedar Ridge and Hendrickson with one loss entering the final week of the season. Hendrickson takes on a struggling Rouse program, while Round Rock takes on McNeil and Cedar Ridge faces Westwood. All three teams should be heavy favorites. 4. District 25-5A was largely settled Saturday. With wins, Cedar Park, Vandegrift and Vista Ridge all qualified for spots in the playoffs. The last week of the season will have a heavy impact on the fourth playoff seed, however. Leander has the clearest shot at making it, as the Lions only need a victory at Dripping Springs to reach the playoffs one year removed from going 0-10.
