Mansfield upsets Cedar Hill to highlight Thursday night results

That added extra intrigue to an already loaded Thursday slate of games. Here are some main takeaways from Thursday night. 1. The biggest upset of the night came when Mansfield knocked off two-time defending Class 6A Div. II state champion Cedar Hill, 46-43. The win pushed Mansfield’s record to 7-2 on the season and 5-0 in district play. The Tigers are now in great shape to win a district championship, which would mean a stunning bi-district playoff matchup between Cedar Hill and Southlake Carroll. The matchup was an offensive one throughout. It had the feel of a game where the last team that held the ball would win and that was Mansfield. After Cedar Hill took a lead with 3:21 left in the fourth quarter after a touchdown pass from Avery Davis to Malik Orr, Mansfield responded by scoring the game-winning touchdown with 1:16 left when Kennedy Brooks scored on a 16-yard touchdown run. 2. The bad luck for Lindale continued in a loss to Ennis. The Eagles are now 2-4 in district and on a three-game losing-streak with Whitehouse and Marshall left on the schedule. Ennis won 14-10 to rebound from last week’s coin-flip loss to Lufkin, but this stung for a Lindale team that lost to Lufkin and Nacogdoches by one point in the previous two weeks. In the same district, Nacogdoches knocked off Whitehouse, 51-21. 3. In Class 4A, Carthage scored a milestone win over Palestine. The 48-14 win moves Carthage to 3-1 in district play and guarantees a berth in the playoffs, but it was also head coach Scott Surratt’s 100th career win at Carthage. It was a busy day in Class 4A. Top teams like Argyle, Texarkana Liberty-Eylau, Pittsburg, Gilmer, Celina and La Grange all won. 4. In the smaller classifications, state-ranked Waskom scored a 49-0 victory over Troup. Also in Class 3A, Blanco blanked Poth in a 49-0 win. In Class 2A, Falls City continued its strong march through district play with a 59-7 victory over Kenedy. Lone Oak most likely locked up a district championship with a 55-13 victory over Grand Saline. Alba-Golden, a team that beat Cooper on Thursday, is all that stands in Lone Oak’s way to an undefeated district record.
