Here are a few things we learned. 1. Class 6A had three headliner contests this week and the favorite won in each game. Cibolo Steele put an exclamation point on its claim as the best team in San Antonio with a 20-13 victory over Converse Judson. The Rockets had struggled some this season, but they put up a good fight against a Steele team that looks more and more like a true title contender each week. The Knights held the lead for the entirety of the win and should be a real challenger in the playoffs because of a strong defense and a diverse running game. Lake Travis blew out Westlake in a 35-14 victory. It will give Lake Travis another district championship and makes the Cavaliers a team to watch in the Class 6A playoffs, which hasn’t always been true since Lake Travis jumped up in classifications after years of dominating the old Class 5A ranks under such coaches as current SMU head coach Chad Morris. Also, Cedar Hill strolled past DeSoto for a 26-2 win. DeSoto’s fall has been quick this season, but that is still a team that will win a few playoff games if the ship is righted enough to reach the playoffs. For Cedar Hill, the win showed that the Longhorns are ready to attempt a three-peat in Class 6A. 2. Crosby stayed undefeated in a 42-35 victory over New Caney. The Cougars are two games away from winning another district title and staying undefeated through the regular season. The New Caney game was the first time Crosby was truly tested since the district-opening win over Humble. Also in Class 5A, the odd result of the weekend was Lufkin picking up a 2-0 win due to winning a coin toss against Ennis. One of the few big games to not take place this weekend was John Tyler vs. Corsicana, which should be played Monday. 3. In the lower divisions, Teague pulled the biggest win of the week when it knocked off Malakoff, 28-7. It was the first loss for Malakoff this season and gives Teague a clear shot at winning a district championship.
