Most importantly, the tragic passing of Alto High School athlete Cam’Ron Matthews after collapsing during a game on Friday shows that life is more important than anything that happens on a football field and we’d like to give our sincerest and deepest thoughts to his family, friends, coaches and teammates in a time that no words can help alleviate the pain of the loss. You can help Matthews' family out by donating to their GoFundMe page. Every little bit surely helps. There is no humane and reasonable transition from that, but here are some other storylines from around the state. 1. Cedar Park took a firm grip at the top of the Class 5A rankings with a victory over Vandegrift. The Timberwolves used a nine-point swing late in the second quarter to take a halftime lead after a Vandegrift safety and a Cedar Park touchdown. The Vipers, another title contender in Class 5A, made mistakes in the second half to help Cedar Park cruise to a victory. The Timberwolves now hold victories over Aledo and Vandegrift and still face Vista Ridge before the end of district play. If Leander reaches the playoffs, Cedar Park and Vandegrift may get a rematch down the road in the state playoffs. 2. In Class 6A, Euless Trinity put a feather in its cap with a 37-35 victory over Southlake Carroll. The classification known for DFW dominance has two huge games outside of the area that will clear up some rankings this coming week. Cibolo Steele wiped out New Braunfels last weekend to setup a showdown with Converse Judson this week to settle the debate on which team runs San Antonio. Likewise, Lake Travis and Westlake do battle in Austin to determine a district champion and the top Class 6A team in the Austin area. Round Rock made a case to be ranked in Class 6A by holding off Cedar Ridge on Friday night, and now gets Hendrickson. It'll be a fun week in Central Texas. 3. Navasota and Argyle are considered the top teams in Class 4A DI, but it was Texarkana Liberty-Eylau that took home the biggest win of the weekend when it beat previously undefeated Pittsburg 6-0. Kilgore also had an impressive showing by knocking off Carthage by a score of 31-28. 4. Sinton knocked off Yoakum in overtime to stay undefeated this weekend. There is a logjam of contenders at the top of Class 4A-D2 and no team recorded a more impressive win than Sinton.
