Southlake Carroll had plenty of answers for the Trojans in a 37-35 loss, just not enough, and the Dragons’ offense just couldn’t keep answering for a host of missed tackles on defense. The Trojans, meanwhile, did what they do. They pounded the football behind their always precise and physical blocking, led by Ja’Ron Wilson’s epic 339-yard performance. It was a spectacular game, one that wasn’t truly decided until the final seconds, but the 603 rushing yards surrendered by Southlake Carroll represent the reddest of flags when considering the Dragons’ title aspirations this year. This formula has won in the past for the Trojans, and it could work again if they can stay healthy (never assured, as quarterback Tyler Natee’s injury scare in the game proved). Cedar Park affirmed its place atop 5A. We admittedly talked the Vandegrift-Cedar Park showdown to death this week, and have talked District 25-5A to death for months. But can you blame us after tonight? Cedar Park edged out Vandegrift 58-45 to regain its hold on the district and maintain its hold on the top spot in 5A, in both the AP and DCTF rankings. Vandegrift is left yet again to consider its defensive issues, while the Timberwolves have to gear up for their duel with Vista Ridge, a game about as far from a foregone conclusion as it once was. Watch out for Crosby. Speaking of 5A, the DCTF No. 5 and AP No. 2 team beat Dayton 30-20 to further cement its place among 5A’s favorites, and hold its spot in a neck-and-neck race with Richmond George Ranch for Houston-area 5A supremacy. In a year with the state championships in Houston, the more contenders from the area, the better. Major contenders in 4A passed tough district passes with flying colors. Navasota thumped Sealy 31-7. Gilmer beat Canton 45-19. Sinton topped Yoakum 27-21. West Orange-Stark rolled a tough Orangefield team 37-3. Liberty-Eylau handled Pittsburg 28-0. These were first-class wins with district titles on the line, and each ranked team passed its test with flying colors. Here comes Mojo Magic. Odessa Permian looked like it might get a stiff challenge out of Abilene, what it got was another lopsided win, 37-13, to add to a year full of them so far. The Panthers are averaging over 50 points per game, and while the competition will surely get nastier when the playoffs arrive, we’re just enjoying Mojo’s return to the state conversation. We’re also eyeing that showdown with San Angelo Central on Nov. 6.
