Upon further review: Processing the Week 7 high school football results

Here are a few major storylines from this past weekend. 1. In Class 6A, the heavyweight battle of the week ended with Klein Collins laying claim to a victory over Spring Westfield. Westfield entered the game with plenty of distractions after last week’s brawl with Spring, which resulted in a few suspensions. Still, Collins pulled off the 24-19 victory to get into the driver’s seat of the district race. Both teams will be a factor in the upcoming state playoffs, but Collins became a viable title contender with this win. 2. District 25-5A is a gauntlet and Vandegrift and Vista Ridge – two teams that entered the district tilt ranked in the top 10 in Class 5A – put on a classic for the Austin area on Friday night. Vista Ridge was once leading 49-28 before Vandegrift stormed back thanks to defensive adjustments and the receiving ability of Paxton Segina, a Rice commit and possibly the best 2016 prospect in Leander ISD. The road doesn’t get easier for Vandegrift, as the Vipers face Cedar Park this week in a game that may decide the district crown. Both teams sit at 6-0 on the season and the Timberwolves are fresh off a 51-14 victory over Leander. 3. Marshall High School didn’t enter the season with a ton of hype, but Clint Harper’s team is 6-0 after knocking off Longview, 28-25. The Mavericks reached the area round of the state playoffs in 2014, but it appears the team led by quarterback Justin Heart could make some real noise in 2015. Heart is a four-year starter at quarterback and there is probably not another Class 5A program in the state with a signal-caller as experienced as Harper, who started as a freshman. 4. Carthage started the season with an overtime-loss and then lost to Gilmer last week to end the non-district portion of the schedule, but the east Texas powerhouse rebounded with a 35-15 district win over Henderson. The Bulldogs won a state championship in 2013 and they’re one of a handful of teams poised to compete for the title in Class 4A Division I. 5. East Bernard pulled off the biggest win in the smaller classifications, knocking off Boling by a score of 48-7. It was Boling’s first loss of the season and gave East Bernard some momentum after starting the year 3-2 with a tough out-of-district schedule.
