Specifically: we can see what teams do well, and what they struggle with. Of course, for every team — from the No. 2 TCU Horned Frogs to the winless North Texas Mean Green — there is good news and bad news, something they excel at and something at which they struggle. From a national statistical ranking perspective, take a look at what each of the 12 teams in Texas are really good (and really bad) at. Baylor Really Good At: Pretty much everything related to offense. The Bears rank in the top three in the nation in pass efficiency, first downs, rushing yards, scoring offense, yards per pass attempt, yards per rush attempt and a handful of other categories. Really Bad At: Committing penalties. The Bears are the most penalized team in the nation, averaging 11.7 penalties for 103.7 yards per game.Houston Really Good At: Stopping the run. The Coogs allow just 2.4 yards per carry, 8th best in the nation. Really Bad At: Scoring in the red zone. Houston scores in just 77.2% of its trips inside the opponent’s 20, which ranks 102nd in the country. North Texas Really Good At: Picking up the pace offensively. Believe it or not, the Mean Green rank 6th in the nation in time per play, taking just 20.2 seconds between snaps. Really Bad At: Completing passes. North Texas has completed just 46% of its passes this year, 121st in the nation. Rice Really Good At: Third down. The Owls are second in the nation in third down conversion rate, getting a new set of downs on 54.2 percent of their third down attempts. Really Bad At: Stopping the pass. Opposing quarterbacks have a 193.42 passer rating against Rice, the second-highest in the nation. SMU Really Good At: Everything related to interceptions. The Ponies are 9th in the nation in interceptions per game (1.8) and 15th in the nation in fewest interceptions thrown per game (0.4). Really Bad At: Defense, basically. SMU is 124th in scoring defense, 125th in rushing yards allowed per game and 124th in passing yards allowed per game. TCU Really Good At: Passing. Take your pick of statistic — the Frogs are 2nd in passing touchdowns per game, 5th in passing efficiency and 2nd in passing first downs. Really Bad At: Forcing turnovers. Strange as it may seem for a Gary Patterson-coached defense, TCU forces just 1.2 turnovers per game, 94th in the nation. Texas Really Good At: Scoring with their defense. The Longhorns have scored three defensive touchdowns in five games, the best scoring rate in the nation. Really Bad At: Getting opponents off the field. The Longhorns are 123rd in the nation in third down defense, 125th in fourth down defense, and dead-last in total first downs allowed. Texas A&M Really Good At: Sacking the quarterback. The Aggies average 3.8 sacks per game (4th in the nation) and rank 6th nationally in sack rate. Really Bad At: Covering punts. A&M gives up 13.5 yards per punt return, which ranks 104th nationally. Texas State Really Good At: Passing a lot. Thanks to QB Tyler Jones, the Bobcats are 12th in the nation in pass completions per game (26.5) and 13th in pass attempts per game (40). Really Bad At: Keeping opponents out of the end zone through the air. One of the big reasons the Bobcats are last in the nation in scoring defense is that they give up the most passing touchdowns per game (3.7). Texas Tech Really Good At: Moving the chains. The Red Raiders lead the nation in passing yards (423.8 per game), but even more impressive: they’re 4th in the nation in percentage of plays that get a first down or touchdown (41.4%). Really Bad At: Pressuring the quarterback. Tech averages just 0.6 sacks per game (122nd nationally) and gets to the quarterback on just 2% of opponents’ pass attempts (127th nationally). UTEP Really Good At: Sitting on the ball. UTEP averages nearly 33 minutes of possession every game, which ranks 17th in the country. Really Bad At: Stopping big plays through the air. Opponents are averaging 9.5 yards per pass attempt (4th most in the nation) and 17.4 yards per completion (most in the nation) against the Miners.UTSA Really Good At: Breaking up passes. “Really good” is probably an overstatement, but the Roadrunners average 3.8 PBUs per game, which ranks 36th in the country. Really Bad At: Tackling opponents for a loss. UTSA averages just 4.2 tackles for loss per game, which is 118th in the country. To put in perspective, the national leader — Oklahoma State — averages 10.2 TFL per game.
