Manhattan, Kansas ready to welcome TCU fans

Bill Snyder Family StadiumGary Patterson and his second-ranked Horned Frogs travel north this weekend to take on the Kansas State Wildcats. Art Briles and Baylor will make the same trip the first Thursday in November. Next season, it’ll be Texas and Texas Tech’s turn to make the trek to the Sunflower State’s 8th largest city. Manhattan, Kansas is not nearly as well known as a travel destination as Manhattan, the most vibrant borough of New York City. But let’s be honest about a trip to NYC: the subways smell bad, the Statue of Liberty is a let down and Times Square lacks any semblance of substance to go with its outlandish flash. With so many Texans’ favorite teams heading to Manhattan in the near-ish future, maybe it’s time you take another look at planning a trip to The Little Apple®. Here are a few tips on a successful and festive football weekend in Manhattan, from our friends at the Manhattan Convention & Visitors Bureau: Where to eat on Friday night: Downtown Poyntz Avenue A revitalization has taken place in The Little Apple® along Poyntz, where new restaurants have pumped a sense of adrenaline into the scenic four-block avenue. Three restaurants have opened recently including two this summer. Your savory selections are many from the immense, new, Tallgrass Taphouse brewpub with beers brewed on site, to the succulence of small-plate soul food at Bourbon & Baker. The culinary selections along Poyntz include barbecue (Pigins), pizza (AJ’s NY Pizzeria), fine Italian (della Voce and Four Olives) and the legendary Harry’s Restaurant, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Where to pre-party on game day: Aggieville The 125-year-plus tradition of meeting friends in a favorite Aggieville hang-out continues at K-State. Wildcat fans meet around any of a dozen bars and restaurants for some tailgate action and friendly banter with opponents’ fans. Purple is the color of choice, but visiting fans are often bought rounds of their favorite beverage to sip and discuss Big 12 football. The K-State Marching Band makes a round on Friday night and the K-State faithful break into gyration mode for the Wabash Cannonball. Game Time! Tailgating tip: Respect is a two-way street Head out to Bill Snyder Family Stadium early for some of the best tailgating in the Midwest. Sportsmanship is generally rewarded in Manhattan, as opposing fans are treated with respect and usually offered a prominent spot with food and drink at the ready. Where to party postgame: West Manhattan Check out Colbert’s restaurant (located at the Colbert Hills golf course clubhouse) or Powercat Sports Grill on the city’s west side for some post-game eats, along with locations around West Loop shopping center like Little Apple Brewing Company. Where to expand your mind: Flint Hills Discovery Center Homework on a Saturday? No way! The Immersive Theater Experience is an amazing film and describes in thrilling details the ambience of the heartland. And if you’ve got some extra time, scoot on out for a nature walk around the Konza Prairie or a quick view of Tuttle Creek State Park and some amazing views of the dam and lake.
