With teams around the state completing Week 6, most high schools are now in district play and vying for finishes to reach the state playoffs. It was an interesting week of games, including an early stoppage, some upsets and a few close wins by the top teams in the state. Here is what we learned in a week where nearly half the top teams in the state didn’t have a game. 1. Pearland escaped with an overtime win over rival school Pearland Dawson. A missed extra point in overtime allowed the Oilers to stay undefeated on the season in a game racked with penalties and mistakes by both teams. There were 310 yards of penalties in the game and Pearland outscored Dawson 11-8 in the fourth quarter to force the eventual overtime win. Dawson must get over the heart-breaking loss quickly because the Eagles face powerhouse Manvel this week. Pearland likely won’t be challenged again in the regular season until the last game of the regular season when the Oilers must travel to Manvel for a game that likely decides the district championship. 2. There have been numerous non-football issues to mar the 2015 season and another one happened this weekend when the Westfield/Spring game was stopped in the fourth quarter after a brawl between the two teams. The favorite, Westfield, was leading by 11 points when the incident happened and stayed undefeated with the win, but it was another black eye for the state in the same season a ref was hit by players at San Antonio Jay High School, which became national news. 3. The top of Class 5A was quiet this week with nearly half the top 25 idle this week and the favorites winning most of the games that did take place, but an upset occurred when Corpus Christ Calallen knocked off Victoria West, 51-24. Victoria West was a Cinderella story of sorts through the first half of the regular season, but Calallen gave Victoria West its first loss of the season. 4. La Grange bounced back this week with a 42-41 overtime victory over Yoakum. It wasn’t a pretty win, but it was one the Leopards needed after falling the previous week to Fredericksburg. The most impressive team in Class 4A Div. II was West Orange-Stark. The Mustangs beat a good, but struggling, Newton squad without much concern or effort this weekend.
