Morning Jolt (Sept. 29): Believe it! These teams are unexpectedly undefeated

We’re now five weeks deep into the 2015 Texas high school football season — yes, that means that the regular season is nearly halfway over. The weeding-out process has already begun in earnest. Of the 1,204 UIL public school teams in the state of Texas, only 152 of them enter play in Week 6 without a loss. That’s right: only 12.6 percent of Texas high school football teams are undefeated. Some are to be expected — your Allens, your Canadians, your Cedar Parks, your Calverts — but there are others that still have a zero in the loss column that (let’s be honest) are pretty surprising. Here are a couple of notable unbeaten squads that have caught our eye. Callisburg (5-0) After going just 3-7 last year, the Wildcats have already handily surpassed their win total from last year and show no sign of slowing. The reason: a defense, anchored by LB Kyle Williams, that’s surrendering just 8.6 points per game, and a grinding running game that’s putting up more than 300 yards a contest on the ground behind RB Chase Caldwell. Pittsburg (5-0) You can’t accuse Brad Baca’s squad of taking it easy, either. Wins over Gladewater, New Boston and Atlanta most certainly move the statewide needle, and as long as quarterback Brian Baca (the coach’s brother, not son) and RB Tray Walker keep on trucking, there’s little reason to doubt the Pirates. Irion County (5-0) Wait…Irion County? The Hornets program that hasn’t had a winning season since 2004? The Irion County team that is a combined 18-51 since 2008? That Irion County? Believe it. Coach David Waddell — and an offense putting up 45 points per game — has the Hornets buzzing. Cy Falls (4-0) This was supposed to be a down year for Cy Falls, but apparently nobody told that to the Golden Eagles, who have stormed out of the gate thanks to the hard-charging running of Desmond Hite and Shannon Vaughns (and some timely passing from QB Casey Rosellini). Cedar Park Vista Ridge (5-0) The Rangers’ offense is absolutely combustible, with dual-threat QB Matthew Snow and shifty RB Isaiah Vilaire guiding the way. We knew District 25-5A was going to be tough, but if Vista Ridge is going to insert itself into the elite tier of teams (and they certainly look like they are), the district just got more insane. A win over Vandegrift this week, and things get really interesting. Tioga (5-0) The Bulldogs didn’t win a game for more than 50 years. OK, that’s a bit misleading — Tioga didn’t have a team for more than half a century, resurrecting the program in 2013 and playing its first varsity season last year. And now, all of a sudden, coach Cody Patton’s squad is halfway to an undefeated season with wins over state powers Throckmorton and Savoy already under their belt.
