Craven: Intriguing results highlight Week 5 action

District play began for many teams across the state, while a few others faced their final non-district test of the season. Here is what we learned. 1. La Grange’s loss to Fredericksburg opened up Class 4A Div. 1. La Grange, led by running back J.K. Dobbins, was the early-season darling of the classification before the loss. It wasn’t a district game, but it was a big setback for a team that already holds wins over Liberty Hill and La Vernia this season. La Grange takes on a Yoakum team this week that’s won two straight. 2. It was a good week for the top of Class 6A. Only one team in our top 25 lost this past weekend and that was Smithson Valley’s loss to state-ranked Cibilo Steele. Allen struggled in a 10-point victory against Flower Mound Marcus, but most of the other teams vying for a state championship cruised in Class 6A. Converse Judson received a scare from Schertz Clemens before pulling away and winning by two touchdowns. The newest arrival into the rankings is Round Rock Cedar Ridge. The Raiders throttled rival Stony Point and look to be a district contender along with Round Rock and Pflugerville Hendrickson. 3. Ennis got back on track and began district play with a 57-0 win over Jacksonville to begin district play. It stopped a two-game losing streak for the Lions after falling to Guyer and Waxahachie in previous weeks. Also in Class 5A, district 25-5A continues to be top heavy with a trio of state championship contenders in Cedar Park, Vandegrift and Vista Ridge. The fourth and final playoff spot in that district is up for grabs, however, and Dripping Springs made a claim to be the favorite to escape with the playoff berth with a big win over Marble Falls. 4. Gilmer is quietly building a very solid résumé in 2015. The Buckeyes are holding steady under a new head coach and capped off a perfect non-district slate with an 18-15 win over Carthage. Gilmer holds victories over Liberty-Eylau, Tatum and Dangerfield on top of the Carthage win. Many expected Gilmer to take a step back this year, but it hasn’t happened yet.
