As we do each week, let’s take a look at what we learned from last night’s action. 1. Euless Trinity, Denton Guyer and Spring Westfield are all top-10 teams in the state and each played well this week in wins. Euless Trinity knocked off Colleyville Heritage, while Denton Guyer flexed its offensive muscle in a 62-44 victory over Keller. Spring Westfield, like Guyer, was idle last week, and the fifth-ranked team in Class 6A came out focused in a 39-13 victory over Montgomery. 2. Each of these three teams will face tougher competition before entering the playoffs, but a win is a win once football enters district. The foursome of Allen, Katy, Cedar Hill and Cibolo Steele are the front-runners in the two divisions of Class 6A right now, but Trinity, Guyer and Westfield are all contenders that took care of business on Thursday night. 3. In the Class 6A game of the night, Mesquite Horn squeaked by Mesquite, 28-27. It was the first district game for both teams. Horn, projected by many to win District 10-6A, needed big plays and a few mistakes by Mesquite to get through the opening week of district without a loss. In two weeks, the Jaguars travel to Highland Park in a game that may determine the district crown. 4. Mansfield Lake Ridge scored the biggest Class 5A win of the night when it beat Waxahachie, 60-34. It was the second district loss in a row for a Waxahachie team that knocked off Ennis the week before district play again. For Lake Ridge, an early win against a top district contender could mean a shot at a district crown down the road. 5. Port Neches-Groves looked dominant in a 45-0 victory over Baytown Lee. PN-G, as the school is known, moved to 3-1 on the season and 1-0 in district play. The Indians’ lone loss this season came in Week 2 against West Orange-Stark. 6. Austin Akins and Austin McCallum pulled off district wins and moved one step closer to a playoff berth in 2015. Akins is quietly 4-1 this season and a dark-horse to make the playoffs out of a tough district that includes Westlake and Lake Travis. Akins is now 2-1 in district with a loss to Del Valle.
