As far apart as these two schools of thought are, finding an agreeable middle ground may not be as hard as you think. Start with a Friday night full of free live music. Then add in a festive Saturday full of tradition, tailgating and college football. If you’re not sold yet, I’ve got two words for you: CHEESE FRIES. Now that you’re drooling, you can scrap the expensive airfare from your travel budget – Stillwater is a pretty easy drive for just about any football fan in Texas. This year, two Big 12 teams from the Lone Star State will venture north of the Red River to take on Oklahoma State: TCU on November 7th and Baylor on November 21st. Next fall, Texas and Texas Tech take their turn travelling to Stillwater. While some environments prove hostile to visiting fans, our friends at Visit Stillwater want to hand over the playbook. That is, they’d like to share the game plan for a perfect football weekend in this college town that throws quite the party when the Cowboys play at home. If you can cut your week at work short, you’ll be in good company as tailgating around Boone Pickens Stadium often gets started on Thursdays. From there, it’s a steady build up until the culmination of pre-game festivities: “The Walk”, in which OSU’s team parades through thousands of fans into the stadium two and a half hours before kickoff. In the event you can’t arrive until Friday, though, you won’t have missed out. Every Friday night before OSU home games, downtown Stillwater is taken over by the “Fridays, Food Trucks and Tunes” festival. With more than 20 food trucks, there’s food and drink for all. A giant movie screen is at one end for those with young ones, and the other end hosts a variety of acts that have contributed to Stillwater’s status as “The Home of Red Dirt Music”. No weekend in Stillwater is complete without a visit to the world-famous Eskimo Joe’s. A legendary hotspot since it opened in 1975, Eskimo Joe’s was named by Sports Illustrated as one of the three best college bars in America. They serve up more than 7,000 pounds of cheese fries every month, which have been mentioned in speeches by two different U.S. presidents. They sell about as many of their well-known T-shirts, which are often seen being worn on all corners of the globe.
